Adonis Stevenson will be fighting for IBF 168 lb title in next bout, with Froch or without him

Image: Adonis Stevenson will be fighting for IBF 168 lb title in next bout, with Froch or without himBy Scott Gilfoid: Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) will be fighting for the IBF 168 pound title in his next bout with or without the current IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch, according to fightnews.com. Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel told Fightnews “It will be against Froch or whoever else if the title is vacant.”

What this means is that Stevenson isn’t going to step aside to let Froch fight former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute or whoever else Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn can dig up for Froch to fight instead of his mandatory challenger Stevenson.

Hearn: Bute or Stevenson will be next for Froch

Image: Hearn: Bute or Stevenson will be next for FrochBy Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Eddie Hearn has narrowed down IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s next opponent to either Lucian Bute or Adonis Stevenson. Hearn and Froch prefer that they get Bute next, but they doubt he’ll take the fight for a variety of reasons, one of them because they think he’s not eager to get back in the ring with Froch for a second helping of defeat.

Hearn said to espn.co.uk “It will be Bute or Stevenson next, followed by Kessler and Ward. I really think Ward would come to the UK and we could do it at an open air football stadium next summer.”

Boxing needs Adonis Stevenson to be a world champion

Image: Boxing needs Adonis Stevenson to be a world championBy Scott Gilfoid: The sooner the IBF strips IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch the better if he’s not going to defend his strap against the talented knockout artist Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) after he earned the IBF mandatory spot by destroying Don George earlier this month in their International Boxing Federation eliminator.

The IBF has ordered Froch to fight the dangerous Stevenson after Froch’s fight next month against Yusaf Mack on November 17th, but Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn is talking about wanting to get the IBF go grant Froch and exception so that he can face Lucian Bute, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward. That’s some exception, isn’t it? In other words, Stevenson would have to wait for likely for all of 2013 and even then Froch will likely retire rather than face Stevenson.

Hearn: If the IBF doesn’t let Froch skip Stevenson bout, he’ll vacate

Image: Hearn: If the IBF doesn't let Froch skip Stevenson bout, he'll vacateBy Scott Gilfoid: As many people expected him to do, IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) won’t be fighting his IBF mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson like the International Boxing Federation so ordered Froch to do. Froch is taking an optional defense next against Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) on November 17th at the Capital FM Arena, in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. After that, Froch wants to take another optional defense this time against former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute next March in Montreal, Canada as part of their contract. But usually champions are only allowed one optional defense followed by a mandatory.

The reason why the sanctioning bodies make champions do this is because if they didn’t some champions might choose to fight bottom feeders over and over again in order to milk their title instead or fighting the top contenders. Froch and Hearn don’t appear to be interested in defending against their mandatory challenger Stevenson, who recently defeated Don George in an IBF 168 pound eliminator bout.

Adonis Stevenson’s trainer Emanuel Steward passes away

Image: Adonis Stevenson's trainer Emanuel Steward passes awayBy Dam Ambrose: Super middleweight contender Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) had a huge blow to his career today with the death of his famous trainer Emanuel Steward, who passed away from an undisclosed cause in a Chicago hospital. Stevenson was really close to the 68-year-old Steward and he’d learned a lot from him during the time that Steward has worked with the 35-year-old Stevenson.

What really hurts is that Steward won’t be around to see Stevenson fight for a world title in 2013, and that’s got to hurt Stevenson because he was hoping Steward would be there for him when that moment came so that the two of them could share in that moment.

Froch may have to vacate title if IBF forces him to fight Adonis Stevenson in early 2013

Image: Froch may have to vacate title if IBF forces him to fight Adonis Stevenson in early 2013By William Mackay: According to boxing news from the Canadian site Lapresse.ca, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) will be trying to get IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) to face his new mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) in the first part of 2013.

Froch, however, already has plans of trying to fight a rematch with former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. Following that, Froch wants to fight Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward in rematches, and there’s talk that Froch would then retire once he got those bouts out of the way.

Stevenson vs. George results: Adonis wins but looks flawed

Image: Stevenson vs. George results: Adonis wins but looks flawedBy Scott Gilfoid: Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) did what pretty much any contender in the division would have done last night in stopping fringe contender Don George (23-3-1, 20 KO’s) in the 12th round at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The victory earns the 35-year-old Stevenson the mandatory spot to fight IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch next year.

I can’t say I was impressed with what I saw of Stevenson, not in the least. Although he did knock the punching bag-like George down five times in the fight, he showed a number of weaknesses that tells me that he won’t stand a chance against Froch next year. Stevenson looked like a poor man’s Peter Quillin with his tendency to throw pretty much nothing but pot shot left hands. You could see he was trying to box by throwing jabs, and that’s probably what kept Stevenson from getting knocked out. But his jab is nothing special, his height is limited, his reach is limited, he can’t throw right hands to save his life and doesn’t look good at all when his opponent is throwing punches.

Stevenson stops George; Lemieux destroys Gaona in 1st round TKO

Image: Stevenson stops George; Lemieux destroys Gaona in 1st round TKOBy Jim Dower: #2 IBF Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) put himself in position to get a title shot against IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch by knocking #11 IBF Don George (23-3-1, 20 KO’s) down five times en route to stopping him in the 12th round on Friday night at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. George, 27, was in constant trouble from the 5th round on, getting knocked down twice in the 5th, once in the 6th and the final two times in the 12th before the fight was finally halted.

However, it’s still very hard to see Stevenson beating Froch, if he ever gets that fight. Froch is a lot better than George and he’d have found an answer to Stevenson’s straight left hands by nailing him with left hands and straights of his own.

Weights: George-Stevenson, Lemieux-Gaona

Image: Weights: George-Stevenson, Lemieux-GaonaBy Jim Dower: Adonis Stevenson (18-1, 15 KO’s) and Don George (23-2-1, 20 KO’s) successfully weighed in today for their IBF super middleweight eliminator bout on Friday night at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The 35-year-old Stevenson came in right at the super middleweight limit at 168 lbs, whereas Geroge came in a little lighter at 167.2 pounds.

Also on on the card, former middleweight contender David Lemieux (26-2, 25 KO’s) weighted in a little over the middleweight limit at 163.6 in his non-title fight scheduled for 10 rounds against Alvaro Gaona (11-1, 7 KO’s). For his part, the 27-year-old Gaona came in at 161.8 lbs.

Stevenson vs George this Friday in Montreal

Image: Stevenson vs George this Friday in MontrealBy Jason Kim: Adonis Stevenson (18-1, 15 KO’s) and Don George (23-2-1, 20 KO’s) will be fighting it out this Friday night in an IBF super middleweight eliminator bout from Stevenson’s home country of Montreal, Canada at the Bell Centre.

Stevenson, #2 IBF, is forced to fight #11 IBF George because none of the higher ranking contenders were interested in taking him on perhaps due to his blazing hand speed and incredible power, not to mention his southpaw stance.
