Andre Berto – Exposing Boxing “Star”

berto555By Payman Kohan: Many boxing fans and critics alike have agreed that professional boxing has produced its fair share of stars propped up and backed by big name promoters and news media. It’s only when those fighters are faced against opposition noteworthy of true high rank status, that the validity of their champion becomes certain.

After Andre Berto’s performance last night against Jesus Soto Karass, it is apparent that the spotlight is on him and his potential of reclaiming “stardom” or fading into the dark.

After a career having defeated some no name competition and a few that only true boxing aficionado’s would rank C at most, Andre Berto climbed his way up the Welterweight Division’s proverbial ladder, and became known as a dangerous rising star.

Rising Star – Errol Spence Jr

By Payman Kohan: Welterweight up-and-comer, Errol Spence Jr (7-0, 6 KO), has been moving steadily under the radar of the boxing public. Training out of the Mayweather Boxing Club, he has reportedly, “caught Adrien Broner with a good shot,” in sparring as quoted by Michael Hunter, and been the unconfirmed cause of a black eye suffered by Floyd Mayweather Jr in a separate sparring session.

Mayweather vs. Alvarez: Has shades of Mayweather-Hatton

floyd33By Payman Kohan: As the Floyd Mayweather Jr (44-0, 26 KO’s) vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KO’s) super fight is being promoted, predictions are being made and excitement is building. Most boxing fans are familiar with Mayweather’s abilities, but many are now looking into Alvarez to see if he can fulfill the hype as the “One” to dethrone the longtime king of pound for pound.

The more I watch Alvarez’s past fights, the more his fight style resembles that of former welterweight champion, Ricky Hatton, along with a few more coincidences that are hard to ignore. Before Mayweather faced Hatton back in December 2007, Hatton came into the fight with a record of 43-0, 31 KO, very similar to that of Alvarez’s.
