The Importance of the “0”

Floyd MayweatherBy Jonathan Gonzalez: In recent years, fighters have consistently been preoccupied with keeping an unblemished record as a way of advertising themselves as “unbeatable”. Most notably, the recently retired pound-for-pound king, Floyd Mayweather Jr., was the sports staunchest promoter of the importance of his “0”.

Promoters have been constantly accused of protecting their fighters in order to keep them undefeated, which in turn boosts their earning power. After all, we’ve seen what 49-0 can do help a man earn, and I don’t know about you but taking $120 million to the bank doesn’t sound too bad. Still, it makes you think about how babied this generation of fighters is perceived to be by so many fans that recall a time when fighters fought anyone, win or lose.

What’s next for Gennady Golovkin?

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Jonathan Gonzalez: Following a pretty good year in 2015, the “God of War” GGG is on the lookout for a potential opponent to start off his 2016 campaign. After unifying the IBF and WBA titles in his last fight against Lemieux, there’s going to be a demand for an opponent of a higher caliber. The goal is to always keep moving forward and maintain the reputation he’s built as the boogey-man of the middle weight division and critics are always so hard to please.

There have been a few names slung around in the past few weeks, but nothing solid. There aren’t too many names in the division that create the kind of spark that comes from a super fight matchup. A showdown with WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez looks to be made in the latter half of 2016 if the stars align perfectly for both warriors, which is why the selection of an interim opponent is important to keep momentum going for Golovkin.

Looking Forward to a New Year in Boxing

Closing out the year, we witnessed the changing of the guard in multiple divisions with multiple champions with many new faces stepping into the limelight. With so many established names and newcomers in the mix, there’s an interesting slew of fights to look forward to in the coming year.
