What to do with Keith Thurman?

thurman32I really consider Keith Thurman as “the legitimate threat” in the welterweight division.  There is some speculation that he is an untested hyped-up fighter.  This may be true, but the facts are no one really wants to fight him or try to expose him.  There seems to be some collaborative efforts in place where everyone has a reason not to fight Thurman.

Many fighters are quick to discredit him to avoid a fight against him.  Whether the excuses are reasonable or not, here is list of fighters that confirmed they will not, do not, or in the past avoided fighting Keith Thurman: Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Shawn “Showtime” Porter, and Luis Collazo.  I have yet to hear or read any news indicating Keith Thurman is avoiding anyone.  Instead, he is calling them all out.

Maidana’s earned shot at Mayweather

maidana5434This is not another article comparing why Marcos Maidana instead of Amir Khan deserves a shot at a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.  Most people would agree that Khan’s extended absence from the ring was the main reason he was not chosen.  Any top welterweight boxer who was active and successful last year deserves a fight over Khan against Mayweather.  That being said let us evaluate Maidana’s “earned shot”.

Going all the way back down into light welterweight, Maidana made his first statement by defeating and exposing Victor Ortiz in 2009.  Then he fought a bunch of unknown fighters until he reached Amir Khan.  Regardless the fact Maidana hurt Khan late, he could not finish Khan, knock him down, and was outworked throughout the entire fight and earned his loss.

Is Adrien Broner the new Andre Berto?

broner55555With big brother Floyd Mayweather Jr. getting ready to show little brother Adrien Broner how not to get hit by a slugger in Marcos Maidana, it seems that Amir Khan and Broner are willing to fight each other.  While Khan has made it clear he is willing to fight on Mayweather’s undercard and already started calling out Broner, Broner is tweeting and tagging images of him fighting Khan.  This will probably be an entertaining fight, but will it be competitive?

We all know styles make fights and Broner will not have to worry as much about Khan’s style or power mimicking Maidana’s, but he did not confidently demonstrate he had an answer for Paulie Malignaggi’s boxing ability.  The fact Broner shows us that he spends too much time thinking in the ring rather than punching back, Khan who is known for winning rounds and outworking his opponents will probably go home with the victory with a unanimous decision.

Mayweather vs. Maidana Undercard

broner6767Keith “One Time” Thurman (23-0-0 22 KOs) has to hold on to his interim WBA belt for another year longer.  It seems that Floyd “Money” Mayweather (45-0-0 26 KOs) swooped in and took Marcos Maidana (35-3-0 31 KOs) away from him and Adrien “The Problem” Broner.  With the recent plan changes, Broner is tweeting that he wants to fight on his big brother’s undercard.  It seems that Thurman versus Broner is the most logical choice for that night.

Considering the fact that Thurman retained his interim belt with a one-sided knockout victory over Jesus Soto Karass the same night Broner lost to Maidana, it was Thurman that should have been the one fighting Broner that night hence the point of an interim belt.
