Ben Whittaker’s Zuffa Appeal Depends on His Results

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/01/2026 - Comments

Eddie Hearn insists Ben Whittaker has more than two years remaining on his Matchroom contract, putting a potential move to Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing well beyond the immediate horizon.

Whittaker’s comments have generated promotional intrigue before his October 3 fight against Conor Wallace in Birmingham. However, Hearn’s account leaves little room for the idea that the light heavyweight is about to become a free agent.

“He’s not even 1 year into a 3-year deal,” Hearn told The FightWire, in comments shared by EverythingBoxing. “But what he does do is create great headlines. Sometimes I’m like, ‘Mate [what are you playing at?].’ It made me laugh that people thought Dana White might be coming to the show on Saturday. He didn’t even come to the AJ-Fury presser.”

That timeline changes how Whittaker’s flirtation with White should be read. Mentioning another promoter can create attention and encourage discussion about a fighter’s earning potential. It does not establish that he is available to sign elsewhere.

Two years is a long time in a fighter’s career. Whittaker could reach the end of his Matchroom deal as a world champion with considerably more bargaining power, or with defeats that reduce the interest in signing him. White would be assessing the fighter Whittaker becomes, rather than buying into today’s publicity.

Whittaker is already 29 and has yet to establish himself against the leading professional contenders or champions. His Olympic silver medal demonstrates his ability, but Tokyo also showed him having to work hard against elite amateur opposition. He beat Imam Khataev by a 4-1 split decision in the semifinal before losing the final to Cuba’s Arlen Lopez by the same margin.

Those results do not determine his professional ceiling. They do give reason to wait for stronger opposition before assuming his movement and showmanship will translate into success against the best light heavyweights.

Saturday’s IBF final eliminator against Conor Wallace is an opportunity to move that assessment forward. A victory would bring Whittaker closer to a title shot, where the questions about his level become harder to avoid.

Hearn may have more than two years left on the contract, but that period will also test Matchroom’s investment. If Whittaker develops into a major attraction, keeping him could become expensive. If he falls short against better opponents, the current Zuffa speculation may look premature.
