Liam Smith has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an alleged attack on a night concierge at a Manchester apartment building.
The former WBO light-middleweight champion, 38, was released on bail after appearing at Manchester Magistrates Court on September 14. He is due at Manchester Crown Court on October 19, where he will be asked to enter a plea.
According to BBC Sport, police confirmed Smith’s arrest after the concierge suffered “serious facial injuries” at The Blade on Silvercroft Street in Deansgate on September 13. The alleged victim reportedly suffered fractures and required surgery.
Smith has not been convicted. The BBC report does not include a plea or a response from him.
His boxing comeback was already struggling before the charge. Aaron McKenna defeated him by a wide unanimous decision in April 2025, dropping him in the final round. Smith’s planned September 4 return against Ilaru Kujala in Finland then fell through because of a reported calf injury.
At 38, another extended absence would leave Smith with less time to rebuild. His January 2023 stoppage victory over Chris Eubank Jr remains a marketable result, but Eubank won their rematch eight months later. The subsequent McKenna defeat left Smith needing to demonstrate that he could still compete against younger contenders.
The proposed Kujala contest offered a chance to regain activity before pursuing bigger fights. Its cancellation delayed that process. The court proceedings now add uncertainty, although no trial timetable or boxing license suspension has been confirmed in the reporting cited here.
GBH with intent carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under Section 18 of the Offenses Against the Person Act 1861. That is the statutory maximum; any sentence would depend on a conviction and the circumstances established in court.
Smith held the WBO light-middleweight title from 2015 to 2016 before losing it to Canelo Alvarez. Any further interruption would make the task of returning to that level harder, but it is premature to declare his career finished.
