Denzel Bentley Chooses Zuffa Over WBO Title Defense

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 09/30/2026 - Comments

Denzel Bentley is choosing a multi-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing over a $160,000 mandatory defense against Yoenli Hernandez, with the WBO middleweight champion reportedly preparing to vacate his title.

The move gives Zuffa another established British fighter while exposing how little financial protection a world championship can provide when a purse bid attracts minimal interest.

Dan Rafael reports that Bentley has signed with Zuffa and will face an opponent to be named in the November 7 London co-feature beneath Chris Billam-Smith against Chev Clarke. According to Rafael’s source, Bentley will reject the terms of this week’s purse bid and relinquish the belt.

Warriors Boxing won the Bentley-Hernandez bidding with the $200,000 minimum. Queensberry attended but did not submit a bid, leaving Hernandez’s promoter with control of the proposed defense.

That outcome gave Bentley little financial incentive to stay. A world title carries prestige, but risking it against a dangerous mandatory for $160,000 becomes a harder sell when another promoter offers a multi-fight commitment. Bentley’s Zuffa purse has not been disclosed, so the size of any immediate financial improvement remains unknown.

For Zuffa, the value extends beyond adding a name to November’s card. Bentley arrives with championship recognition and a clear reason for changing direction. His departure allows the promotion to argue that it offers established fighters an alternative when the traditional title system produces an unattractive payday.

There is a sporting cost. Hernandez earned the mandatory position and would lose the opportunity to challenge the reigning champion. Bentley would leave that obligation behind without settling the matchup in the ring.

Aaron McKenna remains a possible future opponent, but the terminology matters. The WBO previously required Bentley to face Hernandez before pursuing McKenna. If Bentley vacates, a meeting with the IBF champion would no longer unite their two belts.

Bentley’s November opponent will help show what this change delivers. The contract provides a new promotional future; the matchmaking must provide fights worth watching.
