Anthony Joshua Sacrifices Millions For Tyson Fury Fight

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/03/2026 - Comments

Anthony Joshua accepted a pay cut of at least £10 million to bring his December 11 fight with Tyson Fury to Britain, according to Eddie Hearn. The promoter believes fighting in Cardiff gives Joshua an edge, but the expected post-midnight start and Fury’s own British following complicate that calculation.

Joshua has secured familiar surroundings at the Principality Stadium. What he has not secured is a convenient fight time or a crowd certain to favor him.

“To keep it in the UK he’s got to turn down eight figures plus,” Hearn said, as reported by BoxingScene. “AJ goes to me ‘whatever you think’ and I’m like ‘no, no, no, it’s your money. I can’t make that decision for you.’”

Hearn recommended Britain because he believed it improved Joshua’s chances. Joshua accepted the sacrifice, moving the event away from a reported November 20 date at Madison Square Garden.

Staying in Britain removes transatlantic travel, but a bout beginning after midnight still requires unusual preparation. Joshua and Fury will need to be ready to perform late into the night, with the exact ring-walk time still to be set. The location offers familiarity but doesn’t eliminate the scheduling challenge.

The crowd could also be divided. Fury has his own British following, making it difficult to treat Cardiff as a straightforward home advantage for Joshua. Both men could receive substantial support.

There is a financial argument for Joshua’s decision. Beating Fury could generate a lucrative rematch and strengthen demand for his next fight, helping him recover the money surrendered here. That potential return depends on winning. Paying more to secure a preferred location does not guarantee a better performance.

British ticket buyers face their own tradeoff. They get the fight on home soil, but the expected late start accommodates American viewers on Netflix.

Turki Alalshikh claimed switching from New York to Cardiff meant losses of £53 million for the event, separate from Joshua’s reduced purse. Wembley’s 11 p.m. curfew complicated plans, while Cardiff offered a retractable roof and roughly 80,000 capacity.

Joshua has paid a high price for the venue. Whether it gives him the edge, Hearn anticipates, will only become clear once the fight begins.
