Sandor Martin favors Ryan Garcia against Isaac Cruz in a potential welterweight fight, questioning whether Cruz could overcome Ryan’s physical advantages after moving up from 140 pounds.
Martin believes Cruz could drop Ryan, but reaching him would be the harder part. Cruz would have to cross a taller opponent’s punching range repeatedly, making the quality of his entries more important than simply maintaining pressure.
Cruz is one of the options Ryan is considering for his next fight in December, although Ryan has yet to choose an opponent. Ryan’s drawing power gives him greater control over that decision, leaving Cruz waiting to see whether the opportunity materializes.
“Pitbull’s knockout power, despite him being a powerful puncher, decreased at 140,” Martin said in to Luis Parra. “Can a punch from Pitbull put Ryan Garcia on the canvas? I think so. Now, will he have the tools to land that punch? We have to see it in the ring. I think Ryan Garcia starts as the favorite because of his physical advantage, but Pitbull has his chances.”
Marching straight ahead would invite Ryan’s left hook. Cruz would need to feint, draw the lead punch, and move underneath it, then cut off Ryan’s retreat rather than follow him around the ring. Predictable timing would give Ryan repeated opportunities to land his best shot.
Ryan’s upright exits could give Cruz an opening. If Ryan pulls straight back without moving far enough to escape, another step could bring Cruz into position to attack the body. Staying close would force Ryan to defend combinations instead of setting his feet for another hook.
That makes the first exchange crucial. Ryan could punish a careless entry, but throwing his opening punch would not finish the defensive work. If Cruz gets underneath it, Ryan would need to turn away or tie him up before the pressure becomes sustained.
Cruz’s footwork would also affect his stamina. Chasing would consume energy without guaranteeing chances to punch; forcing Ryan toward the ropes would create more useful exchanges. Martin’s preference is understandable, but Cruz’s chances would depend on making Ryan fight at close quarters often enough to overcome those physical advantages.
