Jaime Munguia has got the punch resistance to weather Canelo Alvarez’s power on May 4th, which may not bode well for the undisputed super middleweight champion in their headliner at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo (60-2-2-, 39 KOs) doesn’t possess the youth to match the work rate of the 27-year-old go-getter Munguia (43-0, 34 Kos), his only chance of winning, apart from favorable scoring, is to knock him out. Canelo’s only real path to victory is to KO Munguia.
Failing that, Canelo is heading towards disaster in his bout against the upset-minded Munguia on Amazon Prime and DAZN PPV. Munguia is the fresher fighter by a long shot and can do a lot more things in the ring than the one-paced, slow-footed Canelo.
“The chin of Jaime Munquia, and there’s no question that it’s going to get tested in this fight against Canelo Alvarez,” said boxing expert Chris Mannix to DAZN Boxing. “Even if he’s not the combination puncher he [Canelo] once was, he’s still a thudding puncher. Do you still see that same power in Canelo?”
Questions About Canelo’s Power
The real question is whether Canelo has enough power to knock out Munguia because he’s certainly not going to beat him by outworking him or outboxing him. Munguia is the better boxer of the two, and his work rate is unrivaled.
“Of course, you ask [Jermell] Charlo and Bivol. One of the things people didn’t get a chance to see was the bruising and how bad his [Bivol] left arm was,” said Claudia Trejos. “Bivol was actually handicapped for a couple of months after that fight.
“He took the win decisively, no questions asked, but he took the punishment for that win. He did not get that win cheaply, and let me tell you. Canelo might be 33, he might be battle-tested, and he might have a lot of rounds. One thing he does have is experience. He’s been at this level of shows for the last 13 years of his life,” said Trejos.
