Teofimo Heats Up 140-lb Division: Calls Matias Soft, Claims No One Wants to Fight Him

Teofimo Lopez says IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias is “one-dimensional and the “softest fighter’ in the 140-lb division.

After learning that Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) is negotiating to defend against the unbeaten Liam Paro next in June or July in Puerto Rico, WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo said Subriel doesn’t want to fight him.

Subriel Views Teofimo as Weak

Matias recently said on X that he views Teofimo as a “P***y” and sees him as a guy who avoids fighting the best. Teo has been making a big production of his victory over a washed former undisputed 140-lb champion, Josh Taylor, but the hardcore boxing fans aren’t impressed.

They note that Taylor was coming off a controversial win over Jack Catterall, an average run-of-the-mill contender, and looked past it at 33.

Casual fans in the U.S. have never heard of Josh Taylor, so Teofimo’s win over him didn’t register. It was the wrong guy for Teo to fight for him to impress the casuals and hardcore fans.

Teofimo is defending his WBO title against Jamaine Ortiz (17-1-1, 8 KOs) this Thursday, February 8th, on ESPN and ESPN+ at the Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Matias Labeled “Softest Fighter”

“Social media really made a lot of these boxers soft because they’re like, ‘I don’t really got to fight nobody. I just got say their name,’ but he’s the softest fighter in the division,” said Teofimo to MillCity Boxing, talking about IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias.

“He’s one-dimensional to the point where Puerto Ricans, I tear their [backside] up. Puerto Ricans are easy to beat, and I don’t care if Puerto Ricans feel some type of way,” said Teofimo.

It would be nice if Teofimo at least tried to set up a fight with Matias instead of just bad-mouthing him and claiming he doesn’t want to face him.

“No one wants to fight me—even Subriel Matias. I just found out that he’s going to fight in June or July against Liam Paro,” said Teofimo Lopez to the media, claiming that no one wants to fight him.

“Ain’t he [Matias] asked for me? Didn’t he ask for me after this fight? Y’all don’t see it, do y’all? Y’all can’t be that blind. Nobody wants to fight Teofimo and it’s time to show them why. The only way is to beat the brakes off of Jamaine Ortiz.
