In the latest episode of “What the Heck Were the Judges Watching?” Jamaine Ortiz apparently fought against not just Teofimo Lopez but also the three wise men, aka the judges, who seem to have been, yet again, on a different planet. Fans and pundits alike are scratching their heads, throwing up their hands, and probably flipping a table or two, wondering if we all watched the same fight.
Ortiz, who practically turned the ring into a dance floor with his slick moves, seemed to be in a different league on this night, making Lopez swing at ghosts for the better part of the night. But, surprise, surprise, the Las Vegas judges thought otherwise. Maybe they were dazzled by Lopez’s aggressive shadow boxing or his attempt at backward moonwalking – a bold strategy, no doubt.
The boxing forums are ablaze, and Twitter’s about to explode with hot takes on how Ortiz got done dirty. It’s like the judges were watching a rerun of an entirely different fight, or maybe they were just mesmerized by Lopez’s “youthful charm” and “pretty face” – his words, not ours.
Lopez, in his victory speech, talked about going after bigger fish and even dared to call out Terence Crawford. Bold move for someone who just got a win handed to him on a silver platter.
Ortiz, the gentleman he is, took it on the chin, believing in his heart he won. But let’s call a spade a spade – the man was robbed in high definition, and the fans and experts are not letting this one slide…or are they?
Keyshawn Davis really showed up tonight
The 24-year-old Davis (10-0, 7 KOs) with an Olympic silver dangling around his neck just notched what might be his slickest win to date. He sent Jose Pedraza (29-6-1, 14 KOs), a veteran with belts in two divisions under his belt, packing with a TKO in round six.
The first couple of rounds were like a chess match, with Davis sizing up Pedraza. But then, bam! In rounds three and four, Davis turned up the heat, dishing out lead lefts like they were going out of style, setting up a storm of punches. Pedraza hung in there, so Davis took a breather in the fifth, dancing around the edges. Come the sixth, though, Davis was back in the fray, unleashing combos until the ref, Tom Taylor, had seen enough and waved it off.
Davis was all swagger post-fight, saying, ‘I’ve been hollering all camp long that I’m the king of the 135-pound jungle. Everyone’s been on my case about needing a knockout. I was like, chill, just watch me do my thing. And boom, I delivered.
Now, about Teofimo, who’s been running his mouth – I’m game for a tango at 140. What’s good?! Tonight’s win is just the beginning. You and your old man better be ready. Or if Teofimo’s shaking in his boots, I’ll take on Emanuel Navarrete after he bags the WBO title. That’d be epic. Let’s light it up.”
And hey, let’s not gloss over the fact: Ortiz was downright robbed. Should’ve taken that win home.
