Bill Haney Takes Credit for Mayweather’s Retirement: “Devin Stamped That”

Bill Haney says his son Devin is the one who caused Floyd Mayweather Jr. to retire after sparring with him in 2017. According to Bill, the sparring between Devin and Mayweather “wasn’t close.” After Devin dominated Mayweather, “He knew he had to pass the torch.”

Bill’s Bold Version of History

“He should have shown the sparring video of him and Devin,” said Bill Haney to the media about Floyd Mayweather Jr, talking about sparring between him and Devin Haney that took place before Floyd’s final professional fight against Conor McGregor in 2017.

“It wasn’t close. It was like Floyd was looking in the mirror. It was before the Conor McGregor fight that he finally decided that he could no longer be in boxing with no real fighters. Devin is the one who stamped that.”

If what Bill is saying is true about Devin’s sparring dominance of Mayweather factoring into his retirement, that’s surprising but believable. Floyd looked old and tired when he fought McGregor in 2017, and it was obvious that he was a washed fighter.

If Mayweather had fought any of the young killers back then, Keith Thurman, Errol Spence Jr., or Terence Crawford, he would have been sent into retirement by a knockout.

“He knew the torch had to be passed, and he passed it to Devin because it was either forced or it is what it is right now. We would be challenging him like we’re challenging everyone else. There’s nobody in boxing in around the division. He’s not looking to fight.

Mayweather’s Motivation Questioned

“I wouldn’t say salty because when you have that much money, it’s hard to be salty about anything,” said Bill when asked why he thinks Mayweather is ‘salty’ about Devin Haney, showing Ryan Garcia sparring video of Dev getting knocked out by Gervonta Davis.

“It’s just the way it is. It’s the new era, the Devin Haney era, and that’s the way it is, and he’s hanging onto the Floyd Mayweather era so hard that he choked out Terence Crawford,” said Bill.

It’s been hard for Mayweather to let go of his era, seeing these younger fighters like Haney and Crawford take over, and fans forgetting about the greatness he’d achieved during his career. That might be why Mayweather always shows off his wealth and bragged about himself to validate what he once did.
