Mikaela Mayer (19-2, 9 KOs) wants a rematch with IBF female welterweight champion Nathasha Jonas (15-2-1, 9 KOs) after losing a contested ten-round split decision on Saturday night at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England.

Tight Scores Spark Debate

Mayer felt that she did enough to earn the victory, and many boxing fans on social media felt that she won the fight. The judge’s scores were 96-94 and 96-95 for the hometown fighter Jonas and 97-93 for Mayer. There wasn’t much-divided opinion by fans, as the vast majority saw the fight as a clear victory for Mayer.

The 39-year-old Jonas fought as well as she could, given her age, lack of size, and low punch output, but Mayer was too much for her tonight. She her size, two-fisted punching approach, and nonstop shots to control the entire fight.

Jonas fought well enough to win round one by a close margin, but from that point on, it was all Mayer who stalked her around the ring, throwing bombs with both hands and hurting her rounds nine and ten.

You’ve got to give Jonas credit for surviving without hitting the deck in the final two rounds because she was shaken from the big punches that Mayer hit her with.

Rematch: A Fan-Demanded Encore?

“I thought I did enough to win. I would have given her the first round or two, but after that, I felt I out-punched her and landed the cleaner shots. I think that fight is worth seeing again,” said Mikaela Mayer to Sky Sports Boxing News about wanting a rematch with Natasha Jonas after losing a controversial decision tonight in Liverpool, England.

“I hope we can get this fight done again for the fans if they want it.

“I’m definitely disappointed, but what else can I do? I hope Natasha will be the stand-up champ that she is and give me another shot at the belts.”

The way the fight played out, it’s going to be hard for Jonas to perform better than she did tonight in a rematch with Mayer if she decides to give her one, which is very questionable.

Jonas has no size, power, or work rate to improve in a second fight with Mayer. That’s how Jonas has always fought, and she’s too old to change her game, and she isn’t going to grow.
