Christian Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs) made his case for a title shot against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez next, stopping Rohan Murdock (27-3, 19 KOs) in a sixth-round stoppage win last night in a one-sided massacre at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City.
Murdock’s corner pulled him out after the sixth round due to the punishment he’d absorbed against Mbilli in the contest. By that point, Murdock looked like he’d been through the wringer from taking countless hard shots from the volume puncher Mbilli.
Future of the Division?
For many boxing fans, it was the first time they’d seen Mbilli fight, and they were definitely entertained. He’s got an exciting style and an effective one when matched carefully by his promoters like they did putting him in with the non-puncher Murdock.
Mbilli’s lack of defense and power would likely make him food against the killers in the 168-lb division, but he’s still fun to watch as long as he’s not put in with A-level or elite-level fighters.
What took some fans by surprise was #1 WBC, #1 WBC, #3 IBF & #5 WBO Mbilli calling out Canelo after the fight when interviewed inside the ring.
A Tall Order, a Bigger Stage
Mbilli, 28, is certainly ranked high enough to deserve a title shot against Canelo, but there’s a long queue of better-known contenders than him that have been waiting for their shot at the Mexican superstar. It wouldn’t be fair for Mbilli to jump the line in front of these guys:
– David Benavidez
– Jaime Munguia
– David Morrell Jr.
– Jermall Charlo
– Diego Pacheco
If Mbilli’s promoter believes in him, he should set up a fight between him and WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr. (10-0, 9 KOs) next.
This isn’t Canelo, but Morrell holds a world title, and it would be a good chance for Mbilli to show whether he can handle world-class opposition, which he’s yet to face during his seven-year professional career.
“I want to show I am the best of the division. My goal is to fight Canelo. I will do everything I can do to fight Canelo,” said Mbilli post-fight last night.
