Canelo’s May 4th Dance Card: Jermall the Frontrunner, Benavidez in September, Munguia Waits

Jermall Charlo is still reportedly the frontrunner for Canelo Alvarez to fight next in his debut on Amazon Prime PPV on May 4th. This will be the second fight of Canelo’s three-fight deal with PBC, which many believe will sell on PPV.

Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) returned from a 29-month layoff last November to defeat Jose Benavidez Jr. by a ten-round unanimous decision on Showtime PPV.

If this plays out like it’s being talked about, Jermall will be undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo’s opponent for May 4th, and David Benavidez will reportedly be Alvarez’s opponent for September on Amazon Prime PPV, provided he wins his fight with Charlo.

Charlo: The Likely Dance Partner

“That source said Jermall Charlo remained a frontrunner to box Canelo on May 4,” said ProboxTV.

As long as casuals don’t get Jermall confused with his twin brother, Jermell, a fight between him and undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) should do well on Amazon Prime Video PPV on May 4th.

Jermall looked outstanding against Benavidez Jr., showing the same power and devasting jab as he’d years before.

As always, Jermell’s defense was leaky, but his offense more than made up for it. He kept Benavidez Jr. busy trying to defend against his heavy shots, so he couldn’t do much on offense.

Benavidez: Waiting in the Wings

“The third Canelo fight on the PBC swing would likely, still, be against David Benavidez, which, the source added, could well involve a rematch clause, meaning that, if Canelo lost and activated that clause, the three-fight swing would turn into an effective four-fight deal.”

This would make Benavidez happy to finally get a shot against Canelo because he’s been saving himself for this fight for years.

Munguia’s Mexican Dream on Hold

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions still hopes his fighter Jaime Munguia can score an impressive knockout of John Ryder this weekend on January 27th on DAZN at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. Arizona.

It’s believed Munguia is not in the running for either of Canelo’s fights in 2024, but he does have a shot in 2025 in one of his two matches. That would hinge on Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) still winning.

De La Hoya needs to match Munguia against a live body and stop pairing him with old guys.

Munguia’s opponents:

  • John Ryder: 35
  • Sergiy Derevyanchenko: 38
  • Gabriel Rosado: 38
  • Tureano Johnson: 39
  • Gary O’Sullivan: 39
  • Dennis Hogan: 38
  • Liam Smith: 35
  • Kamil Szeremeta: 34
