By Adam Baskin: Teofimo Lopez Sr. wants the rematch with Teo’s conqueror George Kambosos Jr. to take place next because he wants to shut up the fans who have been giving his son grief since his loss to the Aussie in 2021.

Teofimo Sr. says promote Bob Arum told him that the former IBF/WBA/WBO lightweight champion Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KOs0 can’t fly from Australia to take the fight, and he told him that Teo would go over there for the rematch.

It’s a bit late for Teofimo Sr. to suddenly start showing interest in having his son rematch Kambosos Jr. because he’s already been beaten twice by Devin Haney, and he’s coming off a controversial twelve round majority decision to British fighter Maxi Hughes last July in Oklahoma in a fight that many fans saw him losing.

The timing isn’t good right now for Teofimo Sr. to push Top Tank for the rematch because Kambosos Jr. is expected to fight Vasily Lomachenko in the first quarter of 2024, and that’s a match-up has been talked about a lot recently.

Kambosos Jr. beat Teofimo by a twelve round split decision in November 2021 in New York at Madison Square Garde. The scores were 114-113 for Teofimo, 115-112, and 115-111 for Kambosos Jr. After the fight, Teofimo had excuses about being injured, weight drained, and ring rusty.

However, the boxing public didn’t buy the weak attempts at explaining away the defeat, and they just saw it as a case of Teofimo being mentally weak and falling apart after he was dropped in the first round by Kambosos.

It was the same thing we saw with Teofimo’s fight with Sandor Martin. Teo came unglued mentally after being dropped by Martin, but in that fight, the judges gave Teofimo a controversial decision, which saved his career. After the fight, Teofimo was overheard by ESPN saying, ‘Do I still got it?’

Interestingly, Teofimo and his dad didn’t want a rematch with Kambosos after losing the fight. They opted to move up in weight rather than trying to avenge the loss, which made them look weak and unconfident.

Teofimo Sr. pushing for Kambosos rematch

“I want Kambosos. We’ll tank that mother f***er right now, and you know what Bob [Arum of Top Rank] told me? ‘He [Kambosos] can’t fly from Australia.’ I don’t know,” said Teofimo Lopez Sr. to Punsh Drunk Boxing about wanting Kambosos Jr. for Teofimo’s next fight.

“So, I told Bob, ‘Let’s do it in Australia. That boy will never even touch my son, bro. We’ll box the s**t out of him. I want to talk about it. Do you know why? Because I want the whole world to see when we beat the s**t out of his a** and knock his f***ing a** out.

There are many options for the 26-year-old Teofimo besides a rematch with Kambosos Jr, but it’s unknown if any of them would work out. If Teo believes he deserves $10 million per fight, he’s not going to get any of the big names like Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, or Ryan Garcia to fight him because he can’t sell tickets, and he’s not a PPV fighter.

You’d have to assume that Teofimo will price himself out for those fights, so he will probably have to lower his sights toward someone like Arnold Barboboza Jr.

“That’s a sorry a** boy and that boy isn’t going the distance with my son. He’s going to knock him out, and he already knows it; he already felt it. I want that f***ing fight so everybody can shut the f**k up already. Do you know what I’m saying?” said Teofimo Sr.

“Do you think Kambosos can beat Loma? Never! My son told me that he wants it right away. ‘If I don’t fight Prograis, I want that b**ch. Give me that b**ch.’ He’s a f***ng b**ch. That’s all he [Kambosos] got in his resume.

“What did I told you? That Devin was going to beat him easy. I told you because all you got to do is keep that distance with that boy. He can’t do s**t,” said Teofimo Sr. about Kambosos.
