By Sean Jones: Jermell Charlo says he’s the “Big Charlo” now, and he’s coming to the ring with the power to defeat undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez on September 30th.
It would be a mistake on Canelo’s part if he’s viewing Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs) as the little Charlo for their fight next month because he’s coming into the contest with more size after bulking up from 154, and he’ll be sitting down on his shots, looking to earn his respect.
If Canelo fights recklessly as he did in his last fight against John Ryder, Charlo will do a number on him and send him down to his third career defeat.
With the way Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) has looked lately in his last three fights, he might lose even if he’s in top form. Caleb Plant took something out of Canelo from their war in 2021, and he’s not looked the same since.
Plant tagged Canelo with the same left hooks that he starched Anthony Dirrel with, and he took them, but getting hit with those kinds of shots from ‘Sweethands’ isn’t good for your health.
Brian Custer: “You can go to a fight and see a fighter and have an impression of that fighter, but then when you’re in the ring with them, it’s something different. What is Canelo Alvarez about to find out about Jermell Charlo on September 30th?”
Jermell Charlo: “I’m not the little Charlo. I’m the big Charlo. He’s going to realize that I am what I say I am. Canelo is going to see that I pack good punching power; I got good lateral ability to move around the ring. I’m a general, just like he is.
“He’ll see on September 30th that it won’t be a walk in the park. Just as he’s going to do something different and something better, the same thing with me, but I’m not going to overtrain, overstep or overthink it. I’m just going to get in there and do what I do and have fun.”
Brian: “The same question, Canelo. People have probably seen tape of you. They’ve come to the fights and watched you fight. What is Jermell Charlo going to fight out about Canelo Alvarez on September 30th?”
Canelo Alvarez: “I always say they look outside of the ring a man that is a fighter. When they step in the ring with me, it’s completely different. It’s not the same me outside of the ring. I’m just a different guy.”
