By Adam Baskin: Rolly Romero’s trainer Bullet Cromwell is urging Ryan Garcia to sign the contract to challenge Rolando for his WBA light welterweight title next on PPV.
Ryan Garcia hasn’t said who he plans on fighting next. Last Friday, Ryan took to social media to call out WBC light welterweight champion Regis Prograis, telling him to have his promoter Eddie Hearn send the contract to begin negotiations.
However, moments later, Ryan deleted the Tweet, which suggests that he’s had second thoughts about fighting Prograis, perhaps thinking it was too risky and not a big enough payday to be worth it.
If it’s just about money for Ryan, it means his career is a sham. He’s just a social media boxer, matched exclusively against stiffs until he got a massive cash-out against Gervonta Davis.
Now, instead of rebuilding after the loss, Ryan is looking for another cash-out fight. This time, against the arguably illegitimate champion Rolly Romero.
Ryan would have a better chance against the terribly flawed WBA champ Rolly Romero, but he’ll put himself in the category of a Youtubeer if he takes that circus-level fight.
The money will be good for Ryan, but he’ll be a joke if he takes this fight and needs to think carefully before he makes this fight. If Ryaan loses to a poor champion like Rolly, it’s game over, and maybe it is already.
After the way Ryan quit on a knee against Gervonta Davis, you can’t take him seriously as an opponent for any of the champions at 140 other than Rolly, but he’s a champ with an asterisk next to his name in the eyes of many boxing fans.
Bullet says Ryan (23-1, 19 KOs) is the guy he wants for Rolly (15-1, 13 KOs) to make his first defense of his newly won WBA 140-lb strap, which he captured by a crazy ninth round stoppage against 40-year-old Ismael Barroso last May.
That was the fight that referee Tony Weeks saved Rolly from losing by jumping in and stopping the contest out of the blue. It was almost like Weeks was mentally asleep in the ring and stopped the fight for the heck of it.
The ending was so controversial that it severely tainted the A-side fighter Rolly’s win, and he’s made it worse by calling out Ryan Garcia, begging him for a fight, and looking to cash in on his controversial decision win rather than taking the high road by giving Barroso a rematch.
Rolly’s coach want Ryan to “sign the contract”
“Well, we’re just waiting on contracts; we’re waiting on our negotiations between the team. I let manager Louie Decubas & Al Haymon handle the business side, and I’m going to handle the fight side,” said trainer Bullet Cromwell to Fighthype about his waiting for Ryan Garcia to send the contract to his fighter, WBA light welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero for a PPV-level contest at 140.
Bullet sounds really needy right now, sounding desperate as if he had no confidence in his fighter Rolly to hold onto his WBA title for any length of time before he’s dethroned.
Will the WBA force Rolly to defend against his mandatory Ohara Davies? That mandatory is due, and that’s a fight that Rolly loses unless we get another strange stoppage like the one we saw with Weeks.
“Ryan Garcia, sign the contract, baby. You know what it is. You’ll finally get a shot at a world title. You know your boy, Rolly. He’s going to put you to sleep. You know what it is. It’s about murder, kill-kill,” said Bullet, sending a disturbing yet desperate-sounding message to Ryan Garcia, begging him to sign the contract.
If Ryan doesn’t sign the contract, Rolly is about to become extinct as the WBA champion because he’s gawdawful and incapable of beating his mandatory or anyone halfway decent.
“We’re hoping that we get something big and something that’s worth enough to fight for, like Ryan Garcia or someone on that level to bring the fans so they have something to see,” said Cromwell.
Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly: Is it PPV worthy?
“I like Ryan,” said Bullet when asked who he would like for Rolly to fight next. “Ryan wants a shot at the title and wants to prove himself. They’ve sparred before. We’ve both had two sparring sessions, so everybody knows what they saw in sparring. So we’ll put that in real life and see us do it on the big stage.
“It’ll be very good on pay-per-view,” said Bullet when asked if Rolly vs. Ryan Garcia would do similar PPV numbers as their fights with Tank Davis. “Rolly is a seller, and Ryan Garcia is a seller, so it’s going to be a very popular event in boxing,” said Bullet.
If Ryan vs. Rolly does huge numbers on PPV, it’ll be due to Kingry’s 11 million Instagram followers, not Romero.
“It’s going to be a very good level fight for both fighters because, after that, our [Rolly] goal is to get that rematch [with Gervonta Davis] to take that L [sixth round knockout loss] away,” said Bullet, talking about his futile hopes that Gervonta will give Rolly a rematch, which will likely never happen in this lifetime.
