De La Hoya reacts to Eddie Hearn wanting Munguia for Berlanga: “Good luck”

By Jake Tiernan: Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya wished Eddie Hearn “good luck” with him trying to get Jaime Munguia for super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga’s next fight following his twelve round unanimous decision victory over Jason Quigley last Saturday night at the Hula Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Berlanga & Hearn called out Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) after the fight, saying they wanted him next. When De La Hoya made it clear on Twitter that they’re not going to get Munguia, Hearn said he would speak to DAZN and then return to him to once again discuss making the Berlanga-Munguia fight.

In other words, DAZN will put pressure on De La Hoya to have him let Berlanga fight Munguia. It’s unclear what the repercussions would be for Golden Boy if De La Hoya refuses to let Berlanga fight Munguia.

Eddie Hearn: So he’s a complete idiot, to be honest with you, because his job is to put on good fights for DAZN, and he hasn’t really done that with Jaime Munguia, has he? He’s probably the worst-managed career I’ve ever seen in the history of boxing, Jaime Munguia.

“His opponent list has been awful other than Derevyanchenko recently, who I know is your friend, but he’s also a faded fighter, so what I’ll do with Oscar De La Hoya is I’ll speak to his bosses, and I’ll come back to him.

Edgar Berlanga: “Oscar has got to shut his mouth. He’s [Hearn] the best in the business. People understand. Eddie came from the UK. He came from another side of the world. He came to the U.S. and took over, and he’s taking it over sold rapidly.

“De La Hoya is a crazy guy. One day he’s your friend, and the next day he wants to talk about you. Obviously, you’ve seen what happened with Canelo. He signed a three-fight deal with PBC. So he’s on another network. What are we going to do?

“We’ve got guys like Munguia, guys like Golovkin, guys like John Ryder that we can make happen quickly. Yeah,” said Berlanga when asked if he thinks De La Hoya is bitter towards him. I had a sit down with him before I signed with Eddie.

“He’s a guy with Twitter fingers. He wants to type his a** off. Chill, man. Relax. The love that you guys gave me during fight week. The amount of attention. The build-up for this fight was amazing, bro,” said Berlanga when asked if he was happy with Hearn.

“I’m going to back my promoter up whether who likes it or not. This is the guy, and we’re definitely going to make something happen big after this fight. I left a mark. From the twelfth round, I’m picking up from the twelfth round, and it’s game time. These guys are going to be in trouble for sure.

“Nah,” said Berlanga when asked if Quigley was his toughest fight. “I felt my toughest fight was Angulo because he was a tough fighter who came forward and took a good punch.

“He [Quigley] just had a specific game plan, which was to move around. I take my hat off to him. He’s a great fighter. He stuck in there, especially in the twelfth round. He got hit with some big shots.

“I broke his nose with a jab. I broke his orbital bone with a jab. I’m just happy that I can leave off from the twelfth round and get back in the gym in a week and just run.”

Hearn: “The fact that all week, De La Hoya has been talking about me is great. Don’t forget. My following is probably 80% English. So if Oscar De La Hoya can help my profile over here, it’s fantastic. I just hope that he’s  going to be ok.”
