Lomachenko on Davis vs. Garcia: “[10-lb rehydration clause” is one more thing why Gervonta can beat him”

By Chris Williams: Vasily Lomachenko says the combination of the 10-lb rehydration clause and 136-pound catchweight are more reasons why Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will come out victorious on Saturday night against Ryan Garcia.

Lomachenko points out that Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) is “very big for 135,” which is precisely why Tank Davis’ astute management inserted the rehydration clause & 136-lb catchweight.

While Ryan’s fans see it as a case of him being put at an unfair disadvantage by having to agree to the weight stipulations for the Gervonta fight, it’s more of a situation of Garcia being a ‘weight bully’ by competing in a division that he shouldn’t be fighting at lightweight.

In the future, rehydration clauses should be a part of all fights because it ensures that fighters compete in divisions that are more suited to their body frames.

Right now, younger fighters, who can still drain massive amounts of weight without it negatively impacting their performances, can get away with murder by competing in divisions well below their size.

After those younger fighters rehydrate, they have a tremendous size advantage over their smaller opponents, enabling them to beat guys they wouldn’t normally be able to.

“It is one more thing why Gervonta Davis can beat him. I think so [this will be a major issue] because Ryan Garcia is very big for 135 pounds,” said Vasily Lomachenko to ESNEWS bout the likelihood of the rehydration clause & 136-lb catchweight, making it more likely that Tank Davis defeats Ryan on Saturday night.

Let’s be honest. Ryan is too big for the lightweight division, and it’s entirely unfair to Tank Davis to compete against a guy that should be competing at 140 or even at 147.

As big as the 5’10” Ryan Garcia is now, he could quickly be fighting at welterweight against Jaron ‘Boot’ Ennis, Errol Spence Jr, and Terence Crawford and not look out of place against any of them in terms of his size.

Chris Williams isn’t saying that Ryan would beat any of those guys, but he at least would be the same size. You must have more than a left hook to beat Boots, Spence, and Crawford.

With Ryan’s one-dimensional offensive skills and the bad habit of standing straight up and down on his pipestem legs, he wouldn’t last long at welterweight against even the fringe-level guys.

Everybody knows that Ryan can only make one shot, a left hook. So, I think his [Gervonta] team prepare for him,” added Lomachenko.
