By Adam Baskin: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis was surprisingly WAY ahead on all three of the judges’ scorecards at the time of the ninth round stoppage of his opponent Hector Luis Garcia last Saturday night at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.

With the way the judges scored the match, it’s fair to say that Hector Garcia never stood a chance of winning. The judge’s scores were as follows: 78-74, 79-73, and 79-73.

Was it favoritism that Tank Davis was being shown by the judges? You hate to think that the ONLY reason that Tank was ahead by such wide scores in a fight that he should have been posting is because of his popularity.

That’s what some boxing fans were saying on social media after thee fight when they saw the lopsided scores from the three judges.

This writer had the contest dead even going into the ninth and very much up for grabs. Interestingly, Gervonta (28-0, 26 KOs) seemed to be in denial after the fight, saying, “I don’t think it was close.

The reality is Hector was out-landing Gervonta, outboxing, and getting the better of him in most of the rounds. In the real sense, Tank looked like he was heading toward defeat had he not pulled out the victory with a stoppage in the ninth.

Sadly, it appears that the judges saw a different fight than the boxing world, as they felt that the contest was razor close at the bout ended at the start of the ninth, with many fans feeling that Hector Garcia was ahead.

“I knew I caught him good, but I didn’t know I caught him like that where he was going to come out of the ring, but I knew I caught him good,” said Gervonta Davis at the post-fight press conference, talking about how he hurt Hector Luis Garica in the eighth round.

“I came back to the corner and told my coach that I knew I was going to knock him out because I started touching him more.  No, I don’t think it was close. I was catching him with more cleaner shots,” said Gervonta when asked about his thoughts on the wide scores the three judges had for him through the eighth round.

“The most he was doing was hitting me with a jab, and I don’t feel that’s winning.,” said Tank.

“At the end of the [eighth] round, Gervonta Davis hit him a couple of times on the side of his head, and when he [Hector Luis Garcia] went back to his corner, he couldn’t see from the right eye. That’s why they stopped the fight. ‘I just can’t see from the right eye.’ He was blind by the shots Gervonta gave him in that round in the end. They were during the time, but that’s what blinded him, and he couldn’t see and couldn’t continue,” said Showtime Boxing’s interpreter Felix Dejesus to Fighthype about Hector Garcia on why he couldn’t come out for the ninth round.

“Yes, in the left and the right eye both,” said Dejesus when asked if Hector Garcia regained sight in his right eye after the fight. “He could see. Loss of vision, yeah.”
