Gervonta Davis Sets His Sights Lower With Kambosos

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/02/2026 - Comments

Gervonta Davis pursuing George Kambosos Jr. would show how far his ambitions have fallen. Seeking a rehydration clause against him, as Kambosos’ latest post suggests, would make the choice look worse.

Kambosos, 33, has lost four of his last six fights. His name still has value from beating Teofimo Lopez in 2021, but Davis would be selling that old achievement rather than the Australian’s recent form.

The former unified lightweight champion confirmed that teams are talking while responding to @MoneyTwofly, an account previously linked to Davis. Kambosos disputed the suggestion that he had been repeatedly calling for the fight.

“Actually the complete opposite….you guys be calling more than the IRS,” Kambosos wrote on X. “Listen mate teams are talking, I fear none, just stop with the rehydration clauses ffs. A fights a fight!!! Dog fight, no problem.”

Neither fighter has announced an agreement, and Kambosos did not disclose the proposed weight limit or rehydration allowance. His complaint nevertheless raises questions about the proposed fight terms.

Since 2022, Kambosos has suffered two defeats against Devin Haney and stoppage losses to Vasiliy Lomachenko and Richardson Hitchins. His controversial majority decision over Maxi Hughes offered little reassurance that he could recover his earlier success. Readers who scored that fight for Hughes could view the stretch as five defeats in six appearances, although his official record remains four.

That is the opponent Davis would be asking the public to buy as a challenge. Kambosos brings recognition and a willingness to exchange punches, but his recent results give Tank plenty of reasons to feel confident already.

If Davis’ camp is requesting an additional weight restriction, it invites a blunt question: how many advantages does he need against a struggling former champion?

Kambosos is keeping the fight open while challenging the conditions. For Tank, removing the clause would answer that complaint. It would still leave him needing to explain why this opponent represents the level of competition he wants.
