Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder can happen in England in May says Eddy Reynoso

By Dan Ambrose: Eddy Reynoso says he’s favorable to the idea of his fighter undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez defending against his WBO mandatory John Ryder next, potentially in England.

Ryder’s promoter Eddie Hearn has already contacted Reynoso about making the fight with Canelo (58-2-2 39 KOs), and he’s on board with it. Fighting in England will allow Canelo to try and expand his fan base in a showcase fight.

However, there’s the potential that Ryder could upset Canelo if he performs as did against Zach Parker.

Reynoso is confident that Canelo will be physically ready to fight next May after his recent left wrist surgery. Canelo will start training on the bags in January to get his left hand ready.

‘The Gorilla’ Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) defeated Parker by a fifth round stoppage last week on November 26th to win the vacant interim WBO super middleweight title in London.

Canelo could have chosen a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, but he wants a tune-up to test out his surgically repaired left wrist before he undertakes that risky fight.

Ryder, 34, could wreck things for Canelo if he’s able to come up with a good game plan. He’s upset the odds in his last two fights, beating the big-punching Parker and Daniel Jacobs.

In 2019, Ryder was arguably robbed in a fight with WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith.

“He’s in the part where he’s recovering. No problems, and everything is going well. We can fight in May, and we’ll start to hit bags & equipment at the beginning of the year so that we can come back in May,” said Eddy Reynoso to iD Boxing about Canelo Alvarez coming back from left wrist surgery.

“Yes, we talked about that. It’s an interesting fight. It can happen in England or in Mexico or even in the U.S.,” said Reynoso when asked if Eddie Hearn messaged him about Canelo fighting his WBO mandatory John Ryder next.

“Ryder is coming off a good streak and has had some good fights. We’ll be ready for that fight.

“It’s an interesting fight, a guy that comes forward and is aggressive.  He’s been winning a lot of fights, and it’ll be an interesting fight,” said Reynoso.

Canelo is coming off a close 12 round unanimous decision win over Gennadiy Golovkin last September. That wasn’t a great performance by Canelo, as he gassed out in the later rounds.
