David Benavidez wants to beat Caleb Plant worse than Canelo did

By Sean Jones: David Benavidez is planning on beating the stuffing out of Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant worse than Canelo Alvarez did a year ago when he had the Tennesse native on his back, staring at the lights.

Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) has waited for this opportunity to batter the highly confident ‘Sweethands’ Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) forever, and he probably wouldn’t be getting a chance now if not for his need to a valuable scalp to get a rematch with Canelo.

The 30-year-old Plant wouldn’t need Benavidez if Jermall Charlo were willing to move up from 160 to face him. Unfortunately, Jermall is too busy enjoying the fruits of his labor, passively waiting for a Canelo fight to fall into his lap rather than working for it by facing Sweethands.

If Plant beats Benavidez in March, it’s almost guaranteed that Canelo will fight him again.

Knowing how Canelo operates, he’ll schedule the rematch with Plant in September 2023 and push his second fight with Dmitry Bivol into 2024. Sean Jones believes Canelo will keep pushing the Bivol rematch into the future until someone comes along and beats the Russian.

Once that happens, Canelo will wash his hands of Bivol, telling the fans that there’s no point in fighting him because he got beat.

“My main objective is going in there and beating the s**t out of Caleb Plant,” David Benavidez said to Fighthype about his next fight.

“My plan is to go in there and do what I know I can do to Caleb Plant, and that’s going to put a beating on him worse than Canelo did.”

It’s a different situation with Plant fighting Benavidez as opposed to Canelo. In other words, Plant will be on his bike the entire time, trying to keep from getting riddled to pieces by Benavidez because he doesn’t possess the power to keep him off.

When Plant fought Canelo, he was brave because of his short height and slow feet. Plant can’t do that against Benavidez because of his size,  high work rate, and his ability to cut off the ring.

Plant would literally need to run around the ring for the three minutes of each round to keep Benavidez from tearing him apart.

“I definitely want to make a statement. I’m not Caleb Plant’s friend,” said Benavidez.
