By Allan Fox: Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso reacted to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe saying today that Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant will be ready to defeat Canelo Alvarez after working with new trainer Breadman Edwards for another fight.

In response to Ellerbe’s comment, Reynoso said, “Good joke,” making it clear that he doesn’t take what he said seriously.

Plant really wants the rematch with Canelo something fierce, but he doesn’t seem at all interested in working for it by fighting David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo.

The 31-year-old Plant just wants the rematch, and you can’t blame him because the payday that he’d get fighting Canelo would be enormous.

Plant got a taste of the good money against Canelo last November in a losing effort, and now he wants a second fight.

If Plant would just work for the rematch, it wouldn’t be a problem. Still, as you saw with him choosing to fight the old relic Dirrell, who is many years past his prime, it seems obvious that he’s taking the easy backdoor strategy to try and get a second fight with Canelo by fighting shot guys.

Ellerbe believes that Breadman has improved Plant after watching him knock out 37-year-old Anthony Dirrell in the ninth round last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

‘Sweethands’ KO’d the past his best Dirrell with a left hook to the head, resulting in many casual boxing fans suddenly raving about the Tennesse native’s power.

However, Plant looked like the same light puncher as always through the first eight rounds, and it was only because he caught Dirrell with a shot that he didn’t see that he was able to KO him in the ninth.

In the ninth, Dirrell got reckless and started throwing combinations that had Plant retreating at full speed and changing directions frequently to escape the heat.

Dirrell ultimately paid the price by fighting sloppily when Plant nailed him with a perfect left hook that knocked him unconscious.

Plant (22-0, 13 KOs) had tons of problems with Canelo’s power last November when they fought for the undisputed super middleweight championship.

Canelo pressured Plant the entire fight, forcing him to back up and defend against his hard single shots. By the ninth round, Plant looked exhausted and desperate. From then on, Canelo walked the exhausted Plant down until stopping him in the 11th.
