Video: ESPN was wrong about Modern 4 Belt Era

Last Saturday night at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, George Kambosos put his unified WBO/IBF/WBA “super” lightweight championship on the line against WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.

The fight wound up being rather one sided. Haney was able to expertly command and control the action throughout most of the contest without much issue. Haney established his rhythm early on in the fight, and Kambosos was never able to figure out a way to effectively attack.

Haney showed tremendous patience and skills, and he fought a very disciplined and intelligent effort which never allowed Kambosos to find his groove. At the end of 12 rounds of action. Haney was awarded a unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 116-112 and the other having it 118-110.

With the victory Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney became the first undisputed lightweight world champion in the modern 4-belt era, and he became the first undisputed lightweight champion since the great Pernell Whitaker. Sweet Pea reigned as undisputed lightweight king in the early 1990s. Additionally Haney also became just the eighth boxer to become an undisputed champion in any weight class during the modern 4 belt era. However, the graphic on ESPN contradicts these factual realities.

ESPN had several erroneous claims in their graphic which, taken together, downplay the historic significance of what Haney just accomplished. This edition of Rummy’s Corner will explain the inaccuracies in the ESPN graphic, which include erroneous claims about when the 4 belt era officially began in professional boxing, and also regarding the fact that ESPN included both Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos as four belt undisputed champions. All three claims in the ESPN graphic are complete and total falsehoods, and this video will attempt to explain exactly how and why ESPN was incorrect. Please watch and enjoy the video for one person’s take. This is Rummy’s Corner.
