Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos

By Allan Fox: Devin Haney says he’ll be moving up to 140 next if he doesn’t fight a rematch with George Kambosos Jr. Haney says he’s going to sit down with his team and decide their next move.

Devin isn’t sure whether ESPN or the people in Australia that are putting up the money for a rematch between him and Kambosos will be willing to do so.

It was too much of a one-sided contest for a second fight between Haney and Kambosos, and might not be worth it for ESPN or the Australian government.

Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) defeated unified lightweight champion Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs) last Saturday night to become the undisputed 135-lb champion.

If Haney doesn’t rematch Kambosos, he’d like to fight Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis or Vasyl Lomachenko. Those fights would be at 135. Moving up to 140 would lead to Haney having a lot of options for interesting fights.

“They put so much money on the first fight with the hopes of making it on the second fight,” said Devin Haney to ThaBoxingVoice about the Australian government putting a lot of money in his fight with George Kambosos Jr on June 5th.

“We just got to see if they’re interested in a second fight and if ESPN is interested in a second fight. It’s got to make sense to the network, for the people that are putting the money up,” said Haney about a potential rematch with Kambosos Jr.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Australian government or ESPN aren’t interested in seeing the two fighters again because the ratings & ticket sales might not be worthwhile.

“We have to see if he [Kambosos] actually wants it, the second fight,” said Haney. “If I don’t fight him, I don’t think I’ll be fighting at 135 any longer. We got to see. If he wants the fight, I’ll probably have to vacate because it’s a rematch clause,” said Haney.

Moving up to 140 would open the doors to Haney fighting these guys:

  • Regis Prograis
  • Jose Ramirez
  • Jack Catterall
  • Jose Zepeda

Some of these fighters will be highly dangerous for Haney, and he going to need to focus on his defense a little big money if he wants to win.

“You can’t go fight another fight at 135 if he wants the fight. Loma and Tank, those are the fights that interest me the most, but I’ll fight anybody. My team will sit down and see what’s more interesting,” said Haney.
