By Craig Daly: Promoter Lou DiBella says the recently dethroned former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. will likely be exercising his rematch clause for a second fight against Devin Haney in Australia.

DiBella believes this will be another difficult fight for Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs), but he thinks he can do better than the first fight on June 5th against Haney (28-0, 15 KOs).

There are already many fans saying they don’t want to see a second fight between Haney and Kambosos because they don’t see it being any different than the first.

Kambosos was thoroughly beaten, losing by the scores 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110. Many boxing fans felt that the first two scores were generous because Kambosos appeared to only win one or two rounds tops, and looked lost inside the ring against the more talented Haney.

“Devin came in there and did what he needed to do, and it was a terrific performance by him. It was a boxing clinic,” said Lou DiBella to ESNEWS on Devin Haney’s win over George Kambosos Jr.

“I think he’s going to exercise the rematch clause, yeah,” DiBella continued about the 28-year-old Kambosos Jr. “I’d be surprised if he didn’t. I think the rematch will be difficult for him again, but I do think he can fight better. I do think he’ll exercise the rematch clause, but it’s too early.”

The only way that Haney can get out of a rematch is if he vacates his titles, and he might just do that. He said he was considering moving up to 140 if he and his team choose not to go through with the rematch.

“He took the chances and did the deal in order to do it,” DiBella said about Haney. “Credit to him and his dad, Bill. They did what they needed to do. They grabbed for that opportunity, and he made use of that opportunity and he couldn’t have fought any better than he did. Now he’s got all the belts, and he earned them. Probably at the top of the top ten. He’s only a kid,” said DiBella when asked where he ranks him on his pound-for-pound list.

“He’s [Haney] going to have a great run ahead of him. He’s a tremendous talent, and I’m ready to begin working with him going forward with Top Rank.

“That jab [from Haney] was among the best I’ve ever seen. The young man had an incredible performance. George will be back, he’s still a young man himself, but that was really a star-making performance from Devin Haney
