Fury won’t duck Oleksandr Usyk if he beats Joshua in rematch

By Charles Brun: Tyson Fury is willing to take on unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk if he defeats Anthony Joshua in their upcoming summer rematch.

Fury feels he’s the man for the job to beat Usyk (19-0, 13 Kos), but he states that it’s not going to be cheap to get him to come out of retirement to take this tough fight.

It’s unclear just how motivated WBC champion Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) is about fighting Usyk because it sounds like ‘The Gypsy King’ wants cash-out money to get him back in the ring; that’s a sure signal that he doesn’t fancy the job.

When a fighter warns fans – and the promoters – that it’ll be costly to get him off the sofa, that tells you that he’s NOT eager to take the job.

It’s excellent that Fury and Usyk would be fighting for the undisputed heavyweight championship if that match happens this year. Still, that significance would go over the heads of casual boxing fans.

To the average fan, all they would know is Fury is fighting an obscure heavyweight, and they’re probably not going to purchase the fight in high enough numbers to justify Tyson getting a giant purse.

For any job, it’s not boxing. When you talk the way, Fury is, that’s a red flag that you don’t want it.

In the case of Fury, you can’t blame him because Usyk is a terrible style match-up, and he could very well lose unless he trims down his flabby physique to get to a weight where Tyson can move around like he used to.

“When this middleweight knocks out this bodybuilder again, there’s only going to be one man to sort this absolute circus out,” said Tyson Fury to Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions, about him being willing to fight Usyk.

You better have a big checkbook because to bring the big ‘GK’ (Gypsy King) out of retirement, it’s going to cost,” said Fury.

The cost of getting Fury off the couch to fight Usyk might be prohibitive and too ridiculously high for it to be worth it. If Fury’s asking price is $100 million for a fight against Usyk, I don’t think that will fly.

Even if Fury were fighting Joshua, $100M might be too much, and it’s way overboard if that’s what he’s expecting to get against Usyk, who isn’t a household name in the U.S or UK.

You can argue that the money Fury got for his last fight against Dillian Whyte would be reasonable for him to get in a match against Usyk.

“I am a prize fighter, and I do fight for prizes, but it’s going to cost if you want me to do a mission on this middleweight and show you what a real heavyweight does to him.

That’s going to be expensive, you’re going to have to have big pockets, and we can even talk then,” said Fury.
