Anthony Joshua “is made for” Daniel Dubois says Frank Warren, will talk to Whyte

By Jack Tiernan: Promoter Frank Warren believes former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is made for his fighter, WBA ‘regular’ Daniel Dubois.

Warren is looking for an opponent for Dubois (18-1, 17 KOs) to make his first defense against in September or October after he dethroned WBA champion Trevor Bryan by a fourth-round knockout in an impressive win in Miami.

Dillian Whyte is one of the fighters that Warren is interested in trying to put a fight together with for the 25-year-old Dubois. Warren feels it would be a good “yardstick” for comparison purposes between Dubois and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

It would be ideal for Whyte (28-3, 19 KOs) to be given a title shot against Dubois, given that he’s coming off a sixth-round knockout loss to Fury on April 23rd. Whyte would be almost unheard of a second consecutive title shot, which he hasn’t earned.

“It’s either going to be the WBO or the WBA. Whatever it is, it all leads to us,” said Frank Warren to iFL TV when asked which of the mandatorys will be due at heavyweight next.

He’ll fight in late September or early October, and we’re looking to find a decent opponent for him to fight,” Frank said about Daniel Dubois.

“I have no problem with that,” Warren said about Dubois being interested in defending his WBA title against Dillian Whyte. “Dillian, contrary to what he thought was going to happen to work with us. I’m sure he had.

“I know he lost the fight [against Tyson Fury], but other than that, he had a decent experience. Why not? That’s a great fight. I’d like to see it. It’s a good yardstick. I’ll be speaking to them [Team Whyte],” said Warren.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn might have other ideas for Whyte’s next fight that involve him fighting someone less risky than Dubois.

Hearn mentioned last week the idea of putting together a trilogy match between Whyte and 38-year-old Dereck Chisora, provided Delboy defeats Kubrat Pulev next month on July 9th.

It’s pretty farfetched that Chisora will defeat the former two-time heavyweight world title challenger Pulev, but you can’t rule out the possibility.

“No one has spoken to us about anything, but we’re working on a fight,” said Warren in talking about Dubois. “He will be out. I’m keeping these guys busy. There are great fights for him and Joe Joyce, and ultimately, get a rematch on.

“I fancy him against anybody. He’s a big, big puncher,” said Warren when asked how Dubois would do against Anthony Joshua. “He can box as well. He’s got a great jab.

“I honestly think him and Joshua, I think he, Joshua, is made for him. My personal comment on that is I think he’s made for him [Dubois]. But Joshua has got to get through Usyk first.

“It’s great if he comes through, AJ. We’ll be delighted for him,” said Warren.
