Canelo Alvarez Eyes Azteca Farewell Ahead of Mbilli

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/01/2026 - Comments

Canelo Alvarez wants his final fight at Estadio Azteca, but Christian Mbilli could bring that farewell closer than planned. A punishing defeat on October 31 would leave Canelo weighing whether another championship pursuit is worth the physical cost.

Watching Mexico’s national soccer team at Estadio Azteca inspired Canelo to picture his final fight there. He later held a Zoom call with Emilio Azcárraga to explore staging a farewell in Mexico City.

“I want my last fight to be in Mexico,” Canelo told ESPN. “I visualized myself fighting there.”

Mbilli’s pressure and heavy combinations could speed up those farewell plans. Canelo prefers to walk opponents down and pick his moments to unload, but Mbilli could force him backward and deny him time to rest. If Canelo retreats to the ropes, his counters will need to make Mbilli hesitate. Otherwise, those attempts to conserve energy could leave him absorbing combinations for long stretches.

Landing eye-catching single shots may not be enough if Mbilli keeps throwing combinations against Canelo’s high guard. Covering up along the ropes risks conceding rounds, while punches that land through or around his gloves could steadily wear him down. Canelo needs to hit hard enough to interrupt Mbilli’s attacks and buy himself time to rest.

A stoppage defeat or a twelve-round beating would raise questions beyond whether Canelo can reclaim a world title. He would have to consider how much more punishment he wants to take before walking away.

His Riyadh Season agreement adds another complication. Dan Rafael reports that Mbilli represents the third fight of a four-bout deal, leaving one remaining afterward. Staging that final commitment in Mexico City would require an agreement with the event’s backers. Canelo’s conversation with Emilio Azcárraga opens a possibility, but does not resolve the remaining contractual obligation.

A one-sided defeat could prompt Canelo and Riyadh Season to discuss restructuring or settling the remaining fight. An agreement could open the door to a separate Mexico City farewell. No such negotiations have been announced, and losing badly would not automatically cancel his contractual obligation.

Promoting another championship comeback would also become harder. Canelo would retain considerable drawing power, but a punishing loss to Mbilli could weaken interest in watching him face another dangerous contender. Fans might still pay to see him without believing he can return to the top.

Estadio Azteca would give organizers a different selling point. A Mexican farewell could attract fans eager to celebrate his career, even without a world title at stake. Choosing a beatable opponent would make that homecoming less physically demanding, although the opponent and ticket prices would still influence attendance.

Canelo has identified where he wants to finish. His performance against Mbilli could determine whether that farewell remains a distant ambition or becomes his next priority.
