By Ken Hissner: At the Mechanics Bank Arena, in Bakersfield, CA, Sunday, over FOX S1 and PBC, Tom Brown (TGB Promotions), presented in the Main Event unbeaten Featherweight Maliek Montgomery, of Macon, Georgia, and Las Vegas, NV, in a war defeating Aleem Jumakhonov, Tajikistan and Reseda, CA for the vacant WBC US (USNBC) Silver title over 10 action packed rounds. In the co-feature Welterweight Omar “El Relampago” Juarez scored a knockdown in taking a lopsided but action packed decision over Jairo “Doberman” Lopez over 8 rounds.
In the Main Event Featherweight Maliek Montgomery, 11-0 (10), #126, of Macon, GA, and Las Vegas, NV, in a war defeated Aleem Jumakhonov, 9-4-2 (5), #125.6, of TAJ and Reseda, CA, over action packed 10 rounds, for the vacant WBC US (USNBC) Silver title.
In the first round Montgomery came out southpaw. It was action packed with Montgomery getting the better of Jumakhonov. In the second round Montgomery turned orthodox in the final minute of a war in a close round taken by Montgomery. In the third round Montgomery came out again southpaw turning orthodox after a minute and back to southpaw at the halfway point going back and forth. In the fourth round Jumakhonov is fighting his heart out going toe to toe with Montgomery knocking out the latter’s mouthpiece.
In the fifth round a flurry of punches from Montgomery had Jumakhonov against the ropes at the midway point. In the sixth round Jumakhonov was swelling under the left eye from the attack of Montgomery who is wearing him down. In the seventh round with a minute left in the round Montgomery had Jumakhonov pinned in a neutral corner. Jumakhonov has swelling under both eyes at the end of the round.
In the eighth round the war continued. At the end of the round referee Jack Reiss called in the ring physician to check Jumakhonov for spending too much time on the ropes. In the ninth round Jumakhonov came out with a left followed by a right rocking Montgomery. Montgomery came back well but got hit with a punch after the bell. In the tenth and final round Montgomery starts out backing up countering before having Jumakhonov against the ropes in the corner in the final minute of a war!
Scores were 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92 as did this writer.
In the co-feature Welterweight Omar “El Relampago” Juarez, 12-1 (5), #142, of Brownsville, TX, defeated Jairo “Doberman” Lopez, 27-14 (18), #141, of Nuevo Leon, MEX, scoring a knockdown over 8 rounds.
In the first round Juarez landed numerous rights to the chin of Lopez. A combination with thirty seconds left in the round from Juarez rocked Lopez. In the third round Juarez continued to dominate until the final thirty seconds when Lopez took over for the most part. In the fourth round with a minute left both mixed it up well. In the final fifteen seconds a left hook to the ribs from Juarez hurt Lopez.
In the fifth round just under a minute left in the round a big right from Juarez on the chin of Lopez and down he went for the 8-count from referee Ray Corona managing to get to the bell. In the sixth round Lopez fought back well but not enough to take the round from Juarez. In the seventh and eighth rounds both fought their hearts out with Juarez finishing with a possible knockdown but he pushed the head of Lopez to the canvas ruled a push down by referee Corona in the final round.
Scores were 80-71 and 79-72 twice with this writer 80-71.
Super Featherweight Demler “The War Machine” Zamora, 6-0 (5) #130, of Las Vegas, NV, knocked out Richard Barnard, 1-6-1 (0), #130 ¾, of Waianae, HI, at 2:14 of the second round of a scheduled 6 rounds.
In the second round Zamora scored two knockdowns with the second Barnard was counted out by referee Ray Corona.
Nineteen year-old Super Bantamweight 5:11” Angel “AK-47” Barrientes, 5-1 (4), #121 ¼, of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Las Vegas, NV, Victor “El Torito” Torres, 7-8-1, (5), #121 ½, of Modesto, CA, 6 rounds.
In the second round Barrientes knocked out the mouthpiece of Torres with a left hook. In the first three rounds Barrientes controlled the fight though suffering with blood coming from his nose and swelling under his right eye. In the fourth round a left hook knocked out the mouthpiece followed by a right from Barrientes knocking the mouthpiece of Torres out of the ring!
In the sixth and final round Barrientes has Torres in trouble halfway through the round with a combination to the chin. Torres fought back best he could but it wasn’t enough at the bell. Rudy Barragan was the referee.
Scores were all 60-54 as was the writer’s score.
Super Bantamweight Juan Muro, 1-1 (0), #124, of Bakersfield, CA, won a split decision over southpaw Nicholas Rubalcado, 0-1 (0), #123 ½, of Bakersfield, CA, 4 rounds. Rudy Barragan was the referee.
In the first round Mora was knocked down.
Scores were 37-38, and 38-37 twice for the winner.
