WBC Orders William Zepeda to Face Jadier Herrera

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/01/2026 - Comments

William Zepeda’s first WBC lightweight title defense is reportedly set to come against interim champion Jadier Herrera, giving the unbeaten Cuban his opportunity after being passed over when the full championship became vacant.

The matchup would put Zepeda’s sustained pressure against a younger southpaw with enough power to make his usual approach costly. Zepeda likes to overwhelm opponents with combinations, but forcing exchanges with Herrera could mean taking heavy shots while trying to establish his pace.

The WBC ordered the bout, setting purse bids for Tuesday, October 20 if both camps fail to finalize a deal, according to EverythingBoxing. Official dates and locations remain unannounced.

Sanctioning William Zepeda against Lamont Roach for the vacant strap left Jadier Herrera stranded on the sidelines, despite owning the interim belt at 135 pounds. Herrera held every right to challenge for the primary crown, yet Roach jumped the line following split decisions against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz.

Roach brought respectable credentials, but leapfrogging Herrera defied logic. If an interim titlist gets shoved aside whenever the full championship opens up, owning the strap means very little. This newly ordered mandate finally grants Herrera his overdue opportunity, arriving only after the sanctioning body let two competitors fight for the crown ahead of him.

Jadier faces a major step up in class. An unblemished record across eighteen bouts featuring sixteen knockouts proves his power, yet taking down Nunez leaves questions about handling William Zepeda over twelve full rounds. Herrera must carve out space for his strikes, preventing the champion from turning every clash into extended pressure.

Zepeda carries his own motivation into the ring. Grabbing the vacant title against Lamont Roach rebuilt his standing following that loss to Shakur Stevenson, yet the Cuban challenger brings unique threats. Output alone won’t guarantee victory if Herrera connects with heavier counterpunches.

Both sides can lock down promotional terms directly at the bargaining table. If talks stall, the October 20 purse bid decides everything.
