VIDEO: Heavyweights – Boxing Survey Series Part 8

Rummy’s Corner: Welcome to Part 8 of the Boxing Survey Series. In this edition, we shift our attention to boxing’s marquee weight class – the Heavyweight division, in an attempt to rank the greatest Heavyweight boxers of all time.

That is what this is all about. The Boxing Survey Series is simply a good faith attempt to rank the greatest boxers of All Time. There were 24 volunteers who participated in the Survey, with each being required to supply and submit nine total lists. Each participant provided a Top 15 list for each of the traditional eight weight classes – flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, and each participant also submitted a Top 25 list of the all-time best boxers during the long rich history of the sport. No ties were allowed, just straightforward lists numbered sequentially. The participants are those who generally express great interest in the realm of learning more about the wonderful history of professional boxing. In an attempt to help create an element of surprise, the scoring system was not revealed to the participants during the period when the open survey was underway. The Heavyweight Survey is the final Survey from the traditional 8 weight classes, but there is still one Survey left ahead – the All-Time Best Boxers Survey.

The Heavyweight division is historically rich with deep roots. Many legends of boxing have competed in this spotlight division, where the Heavyweight championship was once the most coveted prize in all of professional sports.. Among some of the outstanding Hall of Fame boxers who made their names as Heavyweights – we have Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, and George Foreman just to name a few. In more recent times, the best in the division has included the likes of Lennox Lewis and the brothers Klitschko, Wladimir and his older sibling Vitali. Currently, Tyson Fury is the reigning lineal and WBC heavyweight world champion, and Anthony Joshua is the unified IBF/WBA/WBO champ.

Right now the biggest fight that can be made in all of boxing would be a mgeabout showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua for the undisputed Heavyweight championship, where the winner might one day enter this discussion. Who is the greatest Heavyweight of all time? And who are the Top 10 Heavyweights in all of boxing history? This survey attempts to provide an answer to both of those questions, while also exploring a deeper look into historical Heavyweight rankings.
