Andy Ruiz Jr. wants Eddy Reynoso to train him

By Dan Ambrose: Andy Ruiz Jr is saying that he wants to be trained by Eddy Reynoso when boxing restarts. Reynoso is famous for being the trainer for Canelo Alvarez, and he also trains lightweight Ryan Garcia and some other well-known fighters.

Teddy Atlas was interested in training Ruiz, but he wanted him to fly over to New York so that he could meet with him. Unfortunately, Ruiz Jr. never called him. It was interesting that Atlas put together training notes on things he wanted to work on with Ruiz.

On Instagram Live on Wednesday, Ruiz Jr. said: “I Want Eddy Reynoso To Coach Me.”

By joining up with Reynoso, Ruiz will get the chance to train in the same gym as Canelo Alvarez. With Ruiz’s experience, there’s probably not a whole lot Canelo can teach him. If anything, the only positive that Ruiz could get from that is to be around a guy that works hard, doesn’t skip training days.

Ruiz Jr. planning tune-up and then Luis OrtizĀ  fight

The ‘Destroyer’ Ruiz wants to take a tune-up fight, and then face 41-year-old former two-time world title challenger Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz (31-2, 26 KOs). After that, Ruiz expects to challenge for a world title. Even if Ruiz beats Ortiz, there will be a lot of boxing fans complaining if he gets another title shot after that.

Getting another title shot after just two fights, it would look bad like Ruiz is getting preferential treatment. Usually, when challengers lose in a title shot, they have to slowly claw their way back to another title shot in 2 to 5 years.

If Ruiz is going to fight for a world title, it probably won’t be against IBF/WBA/WBO champion Anthony Joshua. His schedule is booked up at least a year if not more.

Can Reynoso work miracles with Ruiz Jr. to get him to listen to him and follow his instructions during training camp? Canelo is an excellent fighter, but he’s someone that learned from fighting and watching other fighters.

Just how much Reynoso had to do with Canelo’s development is open for debate. Some believe Canelo did it all himself by learning by observation and through fighting frequently.

If Ruiz signs up with Reynoso thinking he’s going make considerable improvements in his game, he could be disappointed. If Ruiz mistakenly thinks that’s he’s going to be any better than he was with his former coach Robles, he could be kidding himself.

Can Eddy Reynoso help Ruiz Jr?

Ruiz didn’t lose to Joshua because of Robles. He lost because he didn’t put in the effort with him. That’s not going to change by Ruiz being trained by Reynoso.

It’ll be interesting to see if Reynoso wants to take the 31-year-old former IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Ruiz Jr. (33-2, 22 KOs) under his wing to take over as his coach.

The way that Ruiz Jr. dumped his last trainer Manny Robles, it wouldn’t be a shock if Reynoso wants nothing to do with him. Robles was upset about the lack of effort from the 31-year-old Ruiz Jr. when he trained him for his rematch with Anthony Joshua last December.

Is Ruiz capable of winning another world title?

If everything goes perfectly with Reynoso getting Ruiz to control his eating, and work hard for a full training camp, he’s still going to have a hard time winning another world title. Joshua has created the blueprint in how to beat him, and you can beat that WBC champion Tyson Fury will follow what he did.

It might not even matter if Ruiz Jr. loses in another title challenge. The money he’ll get will make it worthwhile for him. It’s too bad that Ruiz would be getting a quick title shot without having to fight someone risky like Dillian Whyte.

Ruiz Jr. was called out by Whyte recently, but he chose not to take the fight. Whyte saw it as Ruiz Jr. ducking him, and he said that he’d been offered an incredible $5 million to take the match.
