by Rummy’s Corner– Coming up just a few short weeks away, on February 22 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a bout that will be broadcast in the US on a joint-venture Fox-ESPN PPV event, reigning WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder will have a highly anticipated rematch against lineal heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury.

This is arguably the absolute greatest match-up that can happen in all of boxing at this time, which is impressive stuff in a day and age where all too often the best rarely face their best opposition on a consistent basis.

Wilder and Fury first met back on December 1, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Both boxing champions had unblemished undefeated records. The fight wound up being captivating and dramatic. Fury controlled most of the action by outboxing Wilder. But late in the fight, Wilder scored two knockdowns. The first knockdown was a good one that came in round 9. But the second knockdown in the twelfth and final round was absolutely vicious. The fact that Fury was able to rise from that knockdown is a testament to his heart, and the fact that Wilder had no quit in him is a testament to his.

At the conclusion of 12 interesting rounds of action in this intriguing clash of styles, the fight was officially ruled a draw. Judge Alejandro Rochin scored it 115-111in favor of Wilder; Judge Robert Tapper had it 114-112 in favor of Fury, and Judge Phil Edwards had it even at 113 apiece, rendering the final verdict a draw. This was a somewhat controversial outcome, because despite being dropped twice, most observers believed Fury had won enough rounds that he still should have been awarded the victory.

Since that time each champion has fought twice. In May of last year, Wilder scored a sensational 1st round knockout victory against Dominic Breazeale. Then in June of last year, Fury scored an impressive 2nd round stoppage against Tom Schwarz. Then last September, Fury was awarded a unanimous decision victory in a challenging fight against Otto Wallin. And then back in November, Wilder scored a dramatic 7th round knockout in his rematch against Luis Ortiz.

The stage is now dramatically set for the highly anticipated rematch on February 22.
