By Sean Jones: Unbeaten welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (15-0, 15 KOs) will be back in the ring in March on DAZN against a still to be determined opponent. The 21-year-old Ortiz Jr. is already in position to challenge for the WBA title against Manny Pacquiao, but he could be poised to go after the WBA ‘regular; welterweight title if it falls vacant.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. shooting for 4 fights in 2020

Ortiz’s promoter Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions is looking to schedule a date in March, according to Dan Rafael. Vergil Jr. wants to fight 4 times in 2020, and for him to do that he and Golden Boy can’t be too choosy in selecting opponents.

The way Ortiz Jr. has looked recently, he might scare away a lot of potential opponents with the way he’s knocking everybody out.

It’s doubtful that the 41-year-old Pacquiao would want to mix it up with Ortiz Jr. soon, because he’s not a big name. There’s not much to gain for the southpaw superstar Pacquiao in facing a young lion like Ortiz Jr. right now.

“We’re trying to nail down the date. DAZN threw a couple of dates at us and we’re trying to see what works,” said Eric Gomez to ESPN.com on Ortiz’s next fight.

In Ortiz’s last fight, he obliterated a good fighter in Brad Solomon (28-2, 9 KOs) by a 5th round knockout last month on December 13 at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California. Ortiz dropped Solomon 3 times in the fight before it was halted.

Going into that fight, Solomon had only lost once in his career in losing a close 10 round decision to Konstantin Ponomarev in 2016. Ortiz Jr. completely dominated the 36-year-old Solomon from start to finish with his powerful shots to the head and body. He showed no respect for Solomon’s power with the way he walked him down, nailing him with big power punches.

Ortiz Jr. on the fast track

With recent wins over Mauricio Herrera, Antonio Orozco, Roberto Ortiz and Juan Carlos Salgado, Ortiz Jr. is being moved quickly by Golden Boy Promotions to the top. His career is on the same early path as superstar Canelo Alvarez with the way he’s being steadily moved up against better opposition.

If Ortiz Jr. can fight 4 to 5 times in 2020, his popularity will go through the roof, and he’ll be ready to take on Pacquiao, Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford in 2021. Those are the top rung welterweights in the division. T

here’s also some very good contenders that would be perfect for Ortiz in 2020. Shawn Porter, Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman, Yordenis Ugas and Danny Garcia would be excellent opponents for Ortiz. Whether any of them would agree to fight Ortiz Jr. at this point is the big question Porter and Thurman appear to be just focused on big fights at this stage in their respective careers, and Garcia is slowly working himself back after losing to Porter two years ago in 2018.
