By Mark Eisner: The WBC reporting that the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Shawn Porter welterweight unification fight will be happening next at a still to be determined date and venue. Spence (25-0, 21 KOs) will have his IBF welterweight title on the line against WBC champion Porter (30-2-1, 17 KOs). The fight is expected to take place in September.

A lot of fans are saying on social media that Porter is a bad style match-up for Spence due to his aggressive high pressure, mauling type of fighting approach. Porter likes to keep the action in close where he uses his strength bump and sometimes accidentally head-butt his opponents. Porter makes it hard for his opponents to get the leverage on their shots that they’re used to. One would assume that Porter is going to make sure that Spence is trapped in an inside fight the entire match. Spence has a lot of strength in his upper body. Porter might not be able to rough him and keep him trapped on the inside like he’s done mot of his opponents.

It’s important that Porter, 31, take the fight with Spence now rather than later. Porter barely scrapped by his last opponent Yordenis Ugas (23-4, 11 kOs) last month on March 9 in winning a 12 round split decision in Carson, California. That was a fight that many boxing fans saw Yordenis as the winner. Porter thinks he did enough, but it looked like he got out-boxed by the talented Cuban fighter.

This is great news for the fans. People want to see Spence take on the best at welterweight to see if he’s for reason. Porter is right there among the best. With Keith Thurman having seemingly lost a portion of his game due to inactivity, age and injuries, Porter is right up there with him now as the best with the Premier Boxing Champions fighters. Spence, 29, needs to show that he’s in the same class as Porter, Thurman and Danny Garcia. He can do that beating Porter this year.

PBC is having an unofficial tournament with Manny Pacquiao fighting Keith Thurman, and Spence facing Porter. The winner of those fights are expected to face each other. Danny Garcia will be in the mix at some point in time to face the winner or loser of either of those fights. At the end of it all, the eventual winner of the mini-tournament could face the Top Rank promoted Terence Crawford to decide who the best welterweight is on the planet. Whether that happens or not will be determined on politics, and the amount of interest there is from the boxing public to see the fight. If Crawford doesn’t keep winning or if he looks bad in his fights and fails to build a fan base, then it might not be worthwhile for Spence, Porter, Thurman or Garcia to fight him. The fight has to make sense for it to get done.
