Quigg: Frampton has many flaws I can capitalize on

quigg89By Gerry Foster: Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs) says he’s studied Carl Frampton’s past fights and noted a number of things that he feels he can take advantage of this Saturday night when the two 122lb champions face each other at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.

Quigg, 27, isn’t saying specifically what weaknesses that he’s seen in Frampton’s game, but he does point out that he struggled in his last fight against 22-year-old Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. last July in their fight in El Paso, Texas.

Frampton won the fight by a 12 round decision, but he was knocked down twice in the 1st round. Those were not flash knockdowns. Gonzalez caught the 5’5” Frampton with solid head shots on both occasions to put him down.

Later in the fight, Gonzalez staggered Frampton in the 9th round when he nailed him with a perfect right hand to the head. Frampton was a lot more careful after that incident, and he didn’t take as many chances against the young Mexican fighter.

“I’ve got the better skills, I’m the better fighter and nobody lives like I do,” Quigg said to bbc.com. “People can say they are dedicated and focused – and they might be. But they don’t come close to the way I live.”

Frampton-Quigg is considered to be a 50-50 fight by most fans. They both have recently beaten Kiko Martinez. Quigg did a better job by far in beating Martinez compared to Frampton. Quigg stopped Martinez by a 2nd round knockout last July.

Frampton defeated Martinez by a 12 round decision in 2014, and a 9th round knockout in 2013. The difference between the two was that Quigg was unloading with his best shots early against Martinez. Frampton was more focused on boxing and not getting hit. Frampton got the job done in style without taking any chances. Quigg fought in a manner that put himself at risk.

Quigg was held to a draw by Yoandris Salinas in 2013, and he showed plenty of flaws in that fight. Salinas showed that Quigg is vulnerable to pressure. Salinas was able to take Quigg best shots and come back with his own. The fight failed to produce a winner, and there was never a rematch h between the two fighters unfortunately.

Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hearn is already talking about putting together a rematch between Quigg and Frampton if the fight turns out to be a close one. This means that we might not see the winner of this contest moving on to other opponents like Guillermo Rigondeaux or Nonito Donaire.

Quigg will have his WBA super bantamweight title on the line on Saturday. Frampton will be putting his IBF strap up for grabs.
