Keith Thurman and Shawn PorterBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Kenny Porter hopes WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) brings his hook with him on March 12 and tries to use it against his son Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), because they intend on punishing Thurman with a counter hook. They want to bust up Thurman and bruise him badly.

Kenny expects Thurman to come out trying to throw hooks, because he’ll have watched Porter’s last fight against Adrien Broner last year and saw how Porter was knocked down by a left hook in the 12th round of that contest. Thurman’s favorite weapon is his left hook, and he loves to throw that shot while he’s moving backwards around the ring.

It’s a punch that Thurman uses so much while backing up that it’s totally predictable at this point. Thurman uses his left hook even more than Danny Garcia, as it’s his bread and butter punch. If you take away Thurman’s left hook, he really doesn’t have much else. His right hand is decent, but it’s not a makor weapon for him like his left hook is.

“We’re going to punish him [Thurman]. We’re going to cut that dude off,” Kenny Porter said to Fighthype. “We’re going to cut him up. We’re going to bruise him up. We’re coming for this kid. He saw that Adrien caught Shawn with a good hook. Please bring it. Please bring your hook and crank your hook up. Start working on that hook now and bring your hook, because when you bring yours, we’ll bring ours,” Kenny said.

The Thurman-Porter fight will be staged at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut. The fight will be televised on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS. This means a lot of boxing fans will be tuning in to watch the fight on free television on CBS. It should bring in good ratings. Also on the card is Edwin Rodriguez vs. Thomas Williams Jr. in light heavyweight action. This will be an interesting fight because both guys like to bang.

“We all saw the body shot [Collazo landed against Thurman]. We all saw him fold off the body shot,” Porter said to fighthype. “Anyone that has the power that Keith has, we do something to offset it. Going to his body is definitely something we want to do.”

Thurman was also dropped by his last opponent 34-year-old Luis Collazo, who hurt him with a hard body shot in the fourth round. Thurman somehow stayed on his feet, but he definitely was exposed in that fight despite winning by a 7th round knockout.

Thurman doesn’t have much of a chin, and he can be hurt by solid shots. But if he can’t take body shots either, then this could be one way for Porter to get the victory. Thurman is likely going to be using a lot of movement in this fight. Porter might have to be content with throwing body shots because it’ll be the easiest thing for him to hit while Thurman is running around the ring and trying not to get hit. Thurman says he won’t run from Porter, but I believe that’s what we’re going to see on March 12.
