By Jim Dower: In a fight between two badly flawed featherweights, Yenifel Vicente (27-3-2, 19 KOs) defeated Juan Dominguez (19-0, 13 KOs) by a third round KO on Tuesday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox Sports 1 at the Sun National Bank Center, in Trenton, New Jersey. Vincente flattened Dominguez with a big right hand while he was attempting to connect with a left hook.

The shot sent Dominguez down on the canvas flat out on back out cold. He was then taken out of the ring on a stretcher. Neither of these guys looked to be in the same class as the top featherweights like Gary Russell Jr., Vasyl Lomachenko, Lee Selby and Leo Santa Cruz.

Vincente unloaded a flurry of big power shots in the 1st round in attempting to get a quick knockout. There wasn’t much technique from Vincente. He just tried to overwhelm Dominguez with punches.

Unbeaten middleweight Immanuewel Aleem (15-0, 9 KOs) defeted Carlos Galvan (11-4-1, 10 KOs) by an eight round split decision. The final judges’ scores were 78-74 and 77-75 for Aleem, and 77-75 for Galvan.

Undefeated cruiserweight Keith Tapia (17-0, 11 KOs) beat 33-year-old journeyman Garrett Wilson (16-10-1, 9 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision.

The final judges were 97-93, 99-91, 99-91.

This was not a good performance from Tapia, as he was hurt a number of times by the hard hitting Wilson. The PBC broadcasters were speaking of Tapia like he’s a future world champion, but I don’t know if he’s even good enough to be a top 10 contender with the way he fought tonight. Tapia looked really poor.

33-year-old former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (33-4, 18 KOs) used his long reach to box his way to a wide 10 round unanimous decision over Shujaa El Amin (12-9, 6 KOs). The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90.

This was Dawson’s first win in the past 18 months. He last fought in October of 2014 in losing to Tommy Karpency by a 10 round decision.

Dawson is going to need to be busier if he wants to try and resurrect his career. Fighting once every 14 months isn’t going to get the job done. If all Dawson and his adviser Al Haymon want to do is fight against guys like El Amin, then Dawson will be a useful fighter for Haymon’s PBC cards for a long time. But if he’s going to be expected to get in the ring with the top light heavyweights like Sergey Kovalev, Artur Beterbiev or Adonis Stevenson, I don’t think that’s going to work out well for him.
