Narvaez defeats Pichardo

By Jim Dower: Fighting for the first time since being stopped in the 2nd round by Naoya Inoue last December, former two division world champ Omar Narvaez (44-2-2, 23 KOs) defeated journeyman Diego Pichardo (16-7-1, 3 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision last Saturday night at the Ce.De.M. N° 2, Caseros, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91. Narvaez had sat out of the ring for all of 2015 for some reason before deciding to comeback against Pirchardo.

The 40-year-old Narvaez picked Pirchardo off with sharp punches and hard jabs to dominate the rounds. Narvaez injured Pirchardo’s eye in the 3rd round, but other than there were nothing dramatic about the fight.

Despite being over-matched, Pichardo fought well initially due to his aggressiveness and Narvaez’s decision to start slowly in the opening feeling out round.

Pirchardo came into the fight having won his last four fights since suffering a 10 round decision loss to Lucas Rafael Baez in September of last year.

Narvaez will need to go in another direction if he wants to win another world title at super flyweight. He can’t fight Naoya Inoue. If Narvaez wants to win another title, he’s going to need to go after champions Carlos Cuadras, Kohei Kono or McJoe Arroyo. Narvaez didn’t help himself sitting out of the ring for almost all of 2015. He’s going to need to make up for lost time if he wants to get a title shot against one of those other champions. I think it wouldn’t be smart for him to fight Inoue again.
