Hughie Fury vs. TBA on November 14th in Bristol

hughie53By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (16-0, 8 KOs) will be putting his unbeaten record on the line next month against a still to be arranged (TBA) opponent on November 14th on the Nick Blackwell vs. Elliot Matthews card at the City Academy Sports Centre, in Bristol, Avon, UK.

It’s an absolutely horrible card right now, so hopefully they bring in a halfway decent opponent for the 21-year-old Hughie to fight. We don’t want to see a graveyard raided in order to find someone for the 6’6” Hughie to fight. I mean, he’s way behind schedule in trying to set the record for the youngest heavyweight ever to win a world title.

I still remember the young 19-year-old Hughie from two years ago, jabbering about how he was going to beat Mike Tyson’s record for being the youngest heavyweight world champion ever. Tyson won a world title in 1986 at the age of 20 when he defeated Trevor Berbick.

Hughie has let two years of his career go by without him even getting a sniff of a title shot. No, I take that back. Hughie did have a chance to take on the talented 6’7” WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on September 26th of this year, but he and his trainer Peter Fury chose not to take the fight.

It doesn’t matter. Hughie still wouldn’t have beaten Mike Tyson’s record even if he’d accepted the fight with Wilder and somehow pulled off the upset of the century by beating him for his WBC title. Hughie turned 21 on September 18th of last month, so he royally blew it.

“I’m improving every single fight,” Hughie said via Fightnews in 2013. “But I will do it, I will beat Mike Tyson’s record and be the youngest heavyweight world champion.”

Now that we know that Hughie couldn’t break Mike Tyson’s record, I’d like to see when Hughie is going to cut his teeth against the first quality opponent of his career. He’s been eating Pablum so far in terms of competition, and we need to introduce him to solid foods already. He’s got a full set of baby teeth now and he’s ready to start facing some quality guys like Mariusz Wach, Andy Ruiz Jr., Joseph Parker, Kyotaro Fujimoto, Andrey Fedosov, Carlos Takam or Erkan Teper.

Hughie might as well start facing the bottom dwellers because he can’t waste his career facing 2nd tier fodder. In Hughie’s last two fights, he defeated George Arias and Andriy Rudenko. I wouldn’t say they were impressive performances from Hughie, as he used a hit, run and hold style that was just so awful to look at.

I’m not impressed with Hughie’s cousin Tyson Fury when I see him fight, but at least Tyson tries to mix it up with his opponents. Hughie doesn’t mix it up at all. He throws a shot, and then runs away from his opponent before they can throw something back. I don’t know how Hughie can have any kind of future fighting like that. I mean, he’s not going to win fights against the better fighters in the sport using the hit and run style that he’s currently employing.
