abraham5(Photo Credit: Sebastian Heger) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) and his promoters at Sauerland Events will be announcing his next opponent this Wednesday, October 7th for his November 21st fight at the Tui Arena, in Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany.

According to the latest boxing news rumors, the opponent for Abraham could very well be bottom ranked #15 WBO Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs), who only recently moved up to the 168lb division this year after getting whipped by IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin last February in losing by an 11th round knockout. I don’t know if Murray can get the fight with Abraham, because Bernard Hopkins is saying that he’ll be fighting Abraham next. I think that’s a much better fight than Abraham-Murray fight

Murray, 33, figured it was in his best interest to move up to super middleweight after that defeat.

In selecting Murray, Abraham would be fighting another one of Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn’s fighters. Abraham recently twice beat Hearn fighter Paul Smith. Now it looks like Murray will be getting the job.

I’m not sure that I agree with Murray getting a fight over other contenders because he’s already fought for world titles on three separate occasions in the last four years and failed every time.

Murray was held to a controversial 12 round draw against former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm in December 2011, and then beaten by former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in April 2013, and then finally beaten by Golovkin in February 2015.

I had Murray losing the fight to Sturm in 2011, but it doesn’t matter that he was given a controversial draw. Murray still failed to win the fight.

Since moving up to super middleweight, Murray has beaten the following obscure fighters: George Beroshvili, Mirzet Bajrektarevic and Jose Miguel Torres. The choice of Torres was an unusual one for Murray, because Torres looked like nothing more than a small junior middleweight. He couldn’t even hold up Murray’s weight when he would lean on him in the clinch. I mean, I lost track of all the times the much smaller Torres fell down in the clinches when Murray would lean on him with all his weight. Murray ended up knocking the poor undersized Torres down seven times in the fight before the referee Howard John Foster stopped the fight at 2:19 of the 5th round.

Abraham has too much power for the likes of Murray, and I can see this fight being a bad mismatch. Murray will likely fight Abraham the same way that he fought Golovkin by moving around the ring all night long to keep from getting nailed by Abraham.

It won’t be a winning formula for Murray, but what else can he do? If Murray tries to stand in front of Abraham and fight him in a toe-to-toe manner, he’ll get swept out of the ring straightaway.

They might as well have some smelling salts ready for Murray if he tries to slug with Abraham. It doesn’t matter that Murray is now fighting in a division that is more suited towards his huge body size, he still doesn’t have a lot of punching power.

I’ve noticed that in Murray’s last three fights, he seems to be fighting in the same style as Golovkin by him chasing down his opponents to punch with them, but this was against three weak opponents. If Murray does that against Abraham, I see it ending badly for him.

In Abraham’s last five fights, he’s beaten Robert Stieglitz twice, Nikola Sjekloca and Paul Smith twice. There hasn’t been much variety due to the rematches. Hopefully, we won’t be seeing a rematch between Abraham and Murray if that fight takes place.
