Image: Matthysse plans on forcing Postol to brawlBy Allan Fox: #1 WBC Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) says he’s going to take the action to the inside when he faces #2 WBC Viktor Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) on October 3rd in their fight on HBO from the StubHub Center, in Carson, California.

Matthysse, 5’7”, knows that he’s got to get on the inside against the 5’11” Postol for him to have a chance of beating the taller fighter. Matthysse won’t be able to stay on the outside against Postol because he’ll be picked off all night by his jabs and long right hands.

Matthysse has a big advantage in punching power and experience over the 31-year-old Postol, who has been matched fairly weakly during his career. Postol is still a very good fighter, but he just hasn’t been tested in the same way that Matthysse has with his battles against the likes of Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia, Devon Alexander, Zab Judah, John Molina and Ruslan Provodnikov.

“Postol is number one. I want to win the title and make a few defenses, and then move up to 147 because that’s where everyone is at right now,” Matthysse said to RingTV.com. I would love to have a big fight. Manny Pacquiao has mentioned me many times as a possibility. I hope that happens. I would be great for me to face such a great fighter,” Matthysse said.

I imagine that he’ll [Postol] be looking to keep me at bay, and I will be trying to sneak in close. That’s how the fight is going to be. I will be looking to hit him to the body and bring in the heat,” Matthysse said.

Postol will definitely be trying to jab and keep Matthysse on the outside all night long if possible. It’s going to be difficult for Postol to do that because Matthysse will be crowing him and looking to nail him with big shots.

One thing that could really hurt Postol in this fight is his bad habit of throwing a lot of punches in his fights. Postol is a high volume puncher with very little punching power. But if he fights like that against Matthysse, it’s going to leave him vulnerable to getting hit a lot by him. Postol seems to have a pretty good chin, but it doesn’t matter how good it is. He’s not going to do well against Matthysse if he’s nailed all night long by him.

Matthysse is coming off of a grueling 12 round decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov earlier this year in April. Matthysse gave Provodnikov a terrible beating in the first six rounds of the fight. But in the last half of the fight, Provodnikov came on strong and was able to hurt Matthysse and make it close in the end. However, the points that Matthysse pile up in the first six rounds were enough for him to win the fight by a close decision.

I don’t think that Postol is going to be able to take the same kind of punishment that Provodnikov took in the fight, because that’s not the type of fighter that he is. Postol usually rarely gets hit in his fights. That’s a good thing and a bad thing for Postol. It’s bad because he’s not going to be ready to get hit by the kinds of shots that Matthysse is going to be nailing him with.

Other fights on the Matthysse-Postol card are as follows:

Antonio Orozco vs. Humberto Soto
Mercito Gesta vs. Martin Honorio
