Shawn Porter wants Canelo at 154, says Kenny P.

porter44By Allan Fox: If former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is able to get past WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight on November 21st, trainer Kenny Porter would like to match his son former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) against the 24-year-ol Canelo.

Even if Canelo lose the fight, it’s quite possible that Kenny would still like to match Shawn against Canelo because it would still be a very big fight.

#3 WBC, #4 WBA, #9 WBO, #11 IBF Porter will likely have to wait for a shot against Canelo if he beats Cotto, because Canelo would then be put in a situation where he would need to defend his newly won WBC 160lb title against the WBC mandatory challenger in Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo hasn’t said whether he’ll take the fight with Golovkin if he wins the fight against Cotto. The two fighters have a rematch clause in their contract for their November 21st fight, so it’s quite possible that Canelo an Cotto could face each other again in an immediate rematch rather than fighting Golovkin or someone else like Porter.

“It’s intriguing to see what Cotto can do at this stage. He’s not the prime Cotto anymore, but he came back very well in his last fight,” Kenny Porter said to Fighthype. “He showed the ability to do some things he did in his younger days. I see the younger guy in Canelo being able to take this decision. I would love to have that fight as well because we don’t have a problem going to 154.”

I doubt that Canelo or his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions would be interested in facing Porter. It’s too much risk with too little reward for the 24-year-old Canelo. Unless it was Canelo who pushed for the fight himself, I think Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya will steer Canelo in another direction rather than putting him in with Porter and having to deal with his inside attacks. However, Canelo is sturdier than the guys that Porter has been getting the better of lately, and I don’t think Canelo would be afraid to fight him. Canelo would have at least a 10 pound weight advantage over Porter if they fought, and he’d clearly be the stronger puncher as well.

Kenny mentions wanting to match Porter against Adrien Broner in a rematch. I don’t think that’s going to happen. The word is Broner could be fighting former WBA “regular” light welterweight champion Khabib Allakhverdiev on October 3rd. The two fighters would be fighting for the vacant WBA 140lb title.

“He [Shawn Porter] started his career out at 154. His first title fight was at 154,” Kenny said. “His first 12-14 fights at professional were at 154. We’re looking for something really big; the Danny Garcia’s of the world, the Keith Thurman’s of the world, the Amir Khan’s. These are the fights we’re looking for. I highly doubt A.B [Adrien Broner] is going to come back out and take the rematch. But if he’s interested, we’ll definitely give him one. So we want to close the show. We want to close the year out really big, and we want a big fight. Keith [Thurman] says he wants a big fight. It’s not a problem for us. We’re interested in it. We want to do it, yes,” Kenny Porter said.

Thurman has talked about wanting to fight Porter, but he’s also interested in fighting Amir Khan. It’s going to come down to what Thurman’s adviser Al Haymon wants to do with him. If he wants to make a fight between him and Porter, then the fight will happen. I not, then we’ll likely see Thurman fighting someone else along the same lines as his last opponent Luis Collazo. I wouldn’t be surprised if Thurman fights Chris Algieri next. Thurman is being matched up against guys that previously were beaten by Khan and others.
