chaves#1By Adam Beechers: Pace is picking up through Argentinian sources and the British media that undefeated IBF World champion Kell Brook 35(24)-0 is set to face Diego Chaves 23(19)-2-1 on 24th October at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.

The Daily Star have already reported it as a done deal set to be announced this week while many boxing forums and twitter are ablaze with the rumors. Brook recently stopped his domestic rival Frankie Gavin in the 6th round nearly 3 months ago and Chaves has not fought since December 2014 where he drew against Former WBO champion Timothy Bradley.

Brook’s Eddie Hearn confirmed that he is close to announcing the next opponent for the man from Sheffield whilst IBF chairman Lindsey Tucker had conflicting comments. “Brook will be October 24th and we will announce the opponent in 2 weeks time.” Hearn said to IFL TV.

It’s interesting to note how in depth Lindsay went into explaining that Chaves was not Brook’s next opponent and this would seem that he has no news regarding the potential fight. If Bradley and Chavez are set to fight then the IBF World rankings leave Brook with some lower class fighters to choose from. The highest ranked fighters without scheduled fights are #3 Sadam Ali, #6 Kevin Bizier and #7 Fredrick Lawson. Bizier lost twice to former Brook cannon fodder Jo-Jo Dan whilst Lawson was shaky but decent against Bredis Prescott in March so might not be the type of fight for PPV that Hearn is looking for. Sadam Ali would be a very interesting fight if that is the way Matchroom Boxing are looking to go and if Golden Boy promotions would let Ali travel to the UK for that fight.

There is no doubt Brook is a huge talent in the welterweight division and his continued chasing Amir Kahn looks to steer him clear of a top level opponent as his 3rd voluntary defence. If the rumors are true then Chaves will be a good test for the 29 year old but if Hearn wants to sell this as PPV if he will have to build a big undercard because the Argentinian will not bring in ‘casual’ fans. He has already confirmed Luke Campbell will be on the bill but surely with out adding IBF super middleweight World champion James DeGale or 2012 Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua it could be a tough sell. Brook should get past Chaves who has lost to Keith Thurman and former potential Brook for Brandon Rios and he really should push for an acid test against the likes of Bradley, Kahn or even the WBA Champion Thurman.
