WBO President Corrects Hernandez-Bentley Mandatory Report

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 09/01/2026 - Comments

Denzel Bentley’s planned voluntary defense remains under review after Yoenli Hernandez formally requested immediate enforcement of his WBO middleweight title opportunity.

Lance Pugmire of BoxingScene reported that Hernandez “will be granted his appeal” to become Bentley’s mandatory challenger. WBO president Gustavo Olivieri publicly corrected that account Wednesday, stating that no appeal exists and no decision has been announced.

“This post is misleading. There is NO appeal. There is a formal petition by Team Hernandez requesting the enforcement of the mandatory.”

Hernandez’s adviser, Luis DeCubas Sr., and Premier Boxing Champions filed the petition after Bentley sought permission to make a voluntary defense. Bentley won the interim belt with a seventh-round stoppage of Endry Saavedra on April 4 and was elevated to full champion in July after Janibek Alimkhanuly vacated the title to move to super middleweight.

Olivieri had issued a more cautious statement Tuesday night, confirming receipt of the request without revealing how the WBO World Championship Committee would rule.

“Please be advised that the WBO has received formal communication from Team Yoenli Hernandez requesting enforcement of the mandatory title defense against WBO Middleweight Champion Denzel Bentley.

“Accordingly, the WBO World Championship Committee will convene immediately to review the matter and issue its determination in accordance with the applicable WBO Regulations.”

The correction removes any ambiguity surrounding Hernandez’s filing. It is a petition for immediate enforcement, not an appeal, and the WBO has not formally ordered Bentley to face him.

Hernandez’s mandatory position was already public. Olivieri stated on August 23 that Hernandez would be enforced after Bentley received one voluntary defense. The new request asks the WBO to withdraw that allowance and send the champion directly into the mandatory fight.

Hernandez’s argument rests on the length of the division’s inactivity. The mandatory obligation dates back to Janibek’s reign, and replacing the champion did not eliminate it. Granting Bentley another optional fight would extend a delay that has already carried through a suspension, an interim championship, and Janibek’s departure from the division.

Bentley has a strong commercial reason to resist. Hernandez is a dangerous challenger with little recognition among British audiences. Domestic fights against Liam Smith or Chris Eubank Jr. would bring greater attention and substantially more money without forcing Bentley to fight outside Britain.

Promotional control may become the next dispute if the WBO grants the petition. Bentley fights under Frank Warren and Queensberry, while Hernandez is represented by PBC. Unless the two sides negotiate a deal, the fight will likely reach a purse bid, with each promoter trying to stage it on favorable ground.

The matchup carries serious danger for both men. Hernandez’s counterpunching and amateur pedigree give him the technical advantage at long range, although Francisco Daniel Veron showed that sustained pressure can force him into uncomfortable exchanges. Bentley owns greater raw power inside the pocket and cannot afford to follow the Cuban while waiting for one clean shot.

To control the fight, Hernandez must maintain a measured distance, punish Bentley’s entries, and avoid spending long periods behind his guard. Cutting off the ring and attacking the body would allow Bentley to create a physical contest before the challenger settles into his preferred rhythm.

Olivieri later indicated that Hernandez is likely to receive the immediate title opportunity, while emphasizing that the committee must make the decision. “Most likely the mandatory will be ordered. News forthcoming,” he stated.

No negotiating period, purse bid, or fight deadline has been established. BoxingScene likely identified the committee’s intended direction, but reported the outcome before a decision was announced and incorrectly described the petition as an appeal. Olivieri expects Hernandez to be ordered as Bentley’s mandatory challenger, with formal confirmation still to come.
