Braehmer stops Glazewski

By Jim Dower: In a stay busy fight by WBA light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer (45-2, 33 KOs) last Saturday night, he stopped unranked Pawel Glazewski (23-3, 5 KOs) in the 1st round of a scheduled 12 round bout at the EWE-Arena, Oldenburg, Germany.

Braehmer backed the 32-year-old Glazewski up with two left hands to the head in the 1st, and he then finished him off with a hard left upper cut to the head that put Glazewski down on the canvas. The fight was then halted at 0:55 of the 1st round by referee Russell Mora.

It’s unknown why the World Boxing Association sanctioned this fight, because there were plenty of better fighters in the top 15 that Braehmer could have fought rather than this guy. Glazewski was beaten by a 43-year-old Roy Jones Jr two years ago.
It would have been interesting to see how the fight turned out if it had gone more than one round. Glazewski was a punching bag for Jones Jr in 2012. It’s hard to imagine him being anything more than a punching bag against Braehmer.

Braehmer hasn’t done much since he captured the WBA World Light heavyweight title two years ago in beating Marcus Oliveira to win the vacant title. Since then, Braehmer has beaten Enzo Maccarinelli, Roberto Bolonti and now Glazewski.

It would be nice to see Braehmer at least face one good light heavyweight contender like Artur Beterbiev or Bernard Hopkins in the near future instead of guys like Glazewski.

I’m not holding breath waiting for Braehmer to turn around and make a title defense against a dangerous guy like Beterbiev because the chances would be too high that Braehmer would be knocked out or at least outpointed. But he really needs to step it up at this point because all three of his title defenses thus far have been little more than stay busy fights instead of competition match-ups.

In other action on the card:

Tyron Zeuge TKO 5 Stjepan Bozic
Jack Culcay UD 12 Karim Merroudj
Denis Boytsov UD 8 George Arias
